I finally got my T2 engine apart and it looks pretty good. The only problem is that the rear rotor had a broken apex seal.. The Apex seals scratched the housing a bit about half an inch before the exhaust port and about 1 inch after.. the scratch is deep enough to feel with your nail.

The question is if I would be able to get by with using this housing since the scratch is only by the exhaust port?

From what you describe about the scratches length wise is not too bad. Any thing more the 1.5 inches is bad. Depth wise I wouldn't recommend any deep over .007 (inch), but I have seen worst do just fine. What you have to be worried about with the scratching is if the scratches are long and deep enough after the exhaust port to contaminant the intake stroke. If it is then go.

also check the water passages through out the whole rotor housing for small wholes. Even whole as small as a pin. check the spark plugs and tension bolts. Becuase if there is any wholes then water will leak in . Remember coolant is hot and under pressure. If you find any trash the housing. i know it sucks if you have to do it. if you use Apoxy it will just eventually float away in the coolant in a few thousnad miles or even less.

The scratch is pretty short, I took a couple of pictures but it is too hard to see, I am just being extra cautios because this is my first rebuild.. The scratch is just deep enough to feel with your nail but not deep enough to catch your nail...know what I mean?

Thanks for the info..

It sounds good. You can use a mircometer to make sure. Fellow each step and don't try any cheap fixes or else your going to be doing it over. Good luck

if you can afford it though it can't hurt to pickup new rotor housings.

How much are new rotor housings?

vosko 11-11-2002 10:36 AM

about $500 each but rotor housings are the life of a rebuild. new housings = good compression. my engine with new housings has 150psi compression https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

yah, new housings are what makes a good motor. also if you are going to use a really maginal housing, it would be better to reuse the old apex seals, they get worn to each other, and a new seal will never really break in to a bad housing.

I would reuse the old seals but one broke so I am gonna get the 2 piece ones from atkins... I guess I will just give the engine an extended break in preiod..
