lately, my shifter has been getting very hot to the touch.

shifter is stock and all, but i changed the knob (old one worn out/dirty) and i couldnt get the boot the way it was(covering entire shifter, up to knob). so i have like 3-4 inches of metal exposed rite under the knob.

anyways, in the past week, i've noticed that the metal rite under the knob gets REALLY hot, something thats never happened before. though im not 100% sure, it seems that its my 5th gear that really gets it hot. local driving i dont really notice it, but once im on highway for like 5-10mins in 5th gear, it gets really hot. no smoke or odor, just heat. its not like dangerously hot, doesnt burn my skin. but its not something i'd want to hold for too long.

please tell me if any of you have experienced this. i dont even know where to begin to check, and i cant afford to have my tranny pulled now. . . im hoping its nothing, or a simple fix. thanks for reading, appreciate any replies.

foopy 04-07-2005 04:15 PM

got oil changed other week, dood at service centered topped off all my fluids... but i didnt check that. hope its just that ^^b

Verify he used the right type of oil.

hmm, just checked fluid level. its right between min and max. hehe, i'm pretty sure i check the rite one (facing the front of car: far rite corner.)

its clearly marked on cap which oil to put in. and i didnt actually see him fill it, but its marked on the receipt that he did, as well as the windshield wiper fluid, which he definitely refilled (light is off on dashboard). haha, he filled it up, but i have no windshield wipers, rod came loose from motor, so i just pulled everything out, looks a lot cleaner ^^. i try not to drive in rain, but i do have rain-ex.

oh does anyone kno off the top of their head, where the fuse for the dashboard clock/lighter is? clock and my cig lighter doesnt work (maybe its getting power, and the actual lighter is fuxed?)

thats the clutch fluid, you need to check the tranny fluid. youll have to get under the car and open the fill hole on the side of the tranny to check it

not sure what you mean by rubber boot, the boot around the shifter is leather-ish. like i said, its not fited properly, and 3-4 inches of metal is exposed rite under the **** knob. but its been like that 2years, and it never got as hot as its getting now. =(

FCmaniac 04-07-2005 05:30 PM

Mine gets hot too. Its no big deal. If you want for piece of mind, just go under the car and check the level. If you don't know how long since you've changed that fluid, you should get it done. A good synthetic may make the trans run cooler. I like Redline.
