My friend works at an A/C place and so does air duct. Well he used some of the metal to make me an air box. It came out pretty well and i added the fuel line on the edges to make a better seal. My other friend had left over ceramic paint that he painted it with. What do you guys think? If enough are interested i am sure he would make duplicates.

I did one just like that out of fiberglass a while back. I see I'm not the only one that thought that retaining the snorkle is a good idea.



Makes a difference for sure. It'll still heat-soak, but it takes a lot longer.

I did something very similar, except with sheet aluminum, and I ditched the washer fluid for an enlarged hole and air duct.

Would it have helped to go with another color than black? Help dissapate heat a little better? Just curious really, the difference is probably negligible, but I just don't know...

From what ive read the color black doesnt actualy take much heat AS long as theres no light on it. I think flat black is preffered but with hood closed the black shouldnt matter. I remember reading something where it went into detial of why radiators are typicaly colored black and all that **** to but i cant remember it all anymore.

^^^ I second that, black doesn't make a difference except when absorbing light energy.

I had that on my car and the difference it made was great, for 4 minutes then it all heatsoaked, so i took it off. I STILL think that the corrugated texture of the snokel is the issue and the metal tube solution is the best way to go

Looks good. I was going to make one as road racing lets us mess with the cold air intake some but I am not sure what components can be swapped. I am pretty sure I have to use the stock Snorkel but the box is ok... What would he charge for another... I could waste time reinventing the wheel, but if it's reasonable I'd buy it. Looks very well done, but like a previous poster said, it will still heat soak. I would line it (inside or out) with some engine insulation material to make heat soak even slower. Then, if you could funnel true outside air to the inside of the box, you would really be set. A lot of people have spent a lot of time trying to figure this one out. Still, it's the best looking box I've seen.

Im not sure what he would charge, 20 or 30 bucks. im not sure because of how it might have to be shipped. I know i said i would get more pictures and i will, tonight actually.



The other question of whether i feel a difference. I do at first it seems but i always think my car pulls a little harder at first. However, it did seem to have a little more power in 5th on the highway.



I do plan on going back and lining it with something, my same friend said he might have found some good material.

I made a similar box for my car just out of thin aluminium. It's just meant to be temporary because I was a bit concerned about having the K&N pod just sitting there. I made a template out of carboard then cut the aluminum to the right size, painted it and ten bolted it in. I put a bottom on mine and kep the snorkel and the top of the airbox as my custom box doesn't come up as high in the engine bay. Leaving the snorkel helps keep my mind at rest that the intake air isn't quite as hot as it could be.

Yeah... more I think about it, I have some left over kevlar and glass from the airplane project. Might as well use it and make one using the snorkel, too. It's a matter of motivation now I guess. But Kevlar is heat resistant and then I spose I could wrap the outside in some sort of reflective thermal blanket. Don't know if there's room or if the rules would let me wrap the snorkel as well. I heard from one fellow, I trust, that there actually is a mild RAM air effect if the box, snorkel and hood are set up right!!??

You would think that the snorkel would actually do something otherwise mazda wouldn't have bothered to put it in there. If it was used to quieten the intake noise down they could have done it another way, so I think it must work in drawing in more and/or colder air to some degree.



I have to give credit to NoeVuh's intake box though. It looks great. It's a lot more professional than mine. Mine was a left over metal, slapped together in an hour or so type of operation! haha

On this one we actualy made a tab on the box so it would fit where that bolt is tightning down just to make sure th box would not wiggle.
