Might as well get other opinions too...

I think I lost my p/s pump or fluid on my way back home today from mobile...normally when I'm at a stop light, I can turn my wheel pretty easy, it wouldn't budge, like it was frozen... and when I went on the interstate to go back home from mobile - i turn this one corner before the onramp, and it just turned like ****, like it didnt really want to go anywhere until I got up in speed.

Is it cause im low on fluid or the belt is off? If it's the case of low on fluid, how and where do you check to see if it is or isn't? I checked the belt today (assuming it's the one below the a/c belt...) and it looked like it was off the track, but I could be wrong.

Anyone know?

I meant to take pictures on what I'm talking about from the belt, but it was too dark for you to see anyway.

j9fd3s 12-08-2002 10:39 PM

well it could be a bunch of different things

1. it could have thrown a belt

2. it could have run out of fluid

3. the ps computer could have died

4. the stepper motor in the pump could have died

5. you could have a bad wire or something

so check the belt, check the level of fluid, and then start lifting wieghts

christi 12-08-2002 10:55 PM

Ok....

Where extactly is the fluid thing located to check it? As well as the ps CPU?

I hate to be stupid, but stepper motor? Never heard of that?...

Well, I'll take a picture of the belt tomorrow and show you guys why I think the belt is off track. It doesn't look like it's in the correct place... I dunno, I could be wrong.

Lift weights? Shall I be afraid of this out coming? lol

Apex13B 12-08-2002 11:13 PM

facing the car from the front. there on the upper right side of the motor there are two pulleys next to each other. That is the power steering assembly there is a dipstick-looking thingy that should have yellow writing on it..that is how you check the power steering fluid

Apex13B 12-08-2002 11:15 PM

being stupid is ok. i'm stupid :stickpoke:

1Revvin7 12-08-2002 11:16 PM

convert to manual, like me!!!

christi 12-08-2002 11:25 PM

manual? it is already? wait lost.

Ok thanks, Apex.

Turbo II 12-08-2002 11:47 PM

yeah my ps belt broke after a hard turn. if u dont see any of the belt material broken its prolly ur fluid.

Ok thanks, Apex.

huh? i meant manual steering rack, no power assist. save weight and space! :bigok: no more parasitic drag and build muscles.

Rob x-7 12-09-2002 11:22 AM

You also could have lost all the fluid from a leak in the cooler, happened to me on 2

of these cars.

But if you lost it all of a sudden, I would say the fluid is good.

christi 12-09-2002 03:09 PM

This is what i'm talking about..

OK. I know some will laugh at this..

I took pics today, I also had the car running (not while taking the pics) of the belt, and that one belt never touched the other pully. I am guessing it is off track, or is it suppose to be like that?

Turbo II 12-09-2002 03:10 PM

from my recolaction, i think thats the way its supposed to be, cant tell really from the picture, widen out the picture

christi 12-09-2002 03:11 PM

#2

Like I said, I could be wrong about all this, but the way it's driving... espically when i turn a corner at a slow rate of speed, it just doesn't want to turn unless you push it.

Though, I'm not sure where that dipstick or whatever it is called is located at to see if I am low on fluid...?

Turbo II 12-09-2002 03:12 PM

where there is no belt, look at what would hold the belt in place. it would just slide right off. so im pretty sure no belt there

christi 12-09-2002 03:15 PM

Well.. if that's NOT the problem, then why is it acting like there is no PS or it's not working at all?

Sorry but it looks wrong as to where it is placed... is all.

Turbo II 12-09-2002 03:18 PM

did ya check ur fluid

Rob x-7 12-09-2002 03:25 PM

That pic is of the air conditioner not the PS. There isnt supposed to be a belt there

anyhow, turn your AC on and you will see that thing you said "no belt here" will spin, thats assuming your AC is working that is.

j9fd3s 12-09-2002 03:28 PM

yah it looks fine so far. if you look at the upper pulley in that picture, that thing will have a little dipstick on it. make sure there is fluid in there

Is it?

Then i've been told wrong, that (not the top) but bottom was the PS?

wait, though i'm getting two answers in this thread.

1. it's not the PS rack

2. it is, but look up and you'll see the dipstick thing.

So which is it? I think I have been told wrong all this time?

TurboII - No, because I don't have a clue where it is...?

j9fd3s 12-09-2002 03:49 PM

the upper pulley in your picture is the ps pump. it has a belt on it, so it cant be the belt thats wrong. so now you need to look at something else, so check to make sure it has oil in it. the dipstick is on top of the ps pump. it will have oil in it

mike

Baldy 12-09-2002 03:52 PM

the pulley that you were pointing to is the air conditioner compressor, the pulley that is at the very top of your pic, the one that's halfway cutoff in the pic, is the ps pulley. I can' t tell you where the dipstick is, because mine is manual steering, but I know that the one you were pointing to is the ac compressor

Rob x-7 12-09-2002 03:58 PM

You werent mislead at all, its not the PS pump, thats the AC.

The pulleys above that one that you wrote on is the PS ( the top of the screen ) , look around there and you will see

a small oval shaped thing that you give a twist and pull out and it is a dipstick for the PS fluid.

Turbo II 12-09-2002 05:54 PM

let us know. or like mike said start lifing weights and keep the ps that way

Apex13B 12-09-2002 08:18 PM

heres a diagram that might be useful for you:

FC power steering overview

you probably need fluid, but that may be because you have a leak.

if you need a pump replacement pm me mine is sitting in my garage and i was planning on putting it on ebay anyways.
