I need some help. I almost about had it with my car. Story goes:
Yesturday I took my stock wheels to get R compounds mounted on them. 225/50/16 Toyo RA1 set at 35 psig. I mounted the wheels last night so that I could drive the car to work and go get teh car corner weighted. The previous day I had done a short test drive with the car with my stock wheels and 205/55/16 random tires. This morning I went to go pull the car out the garage and drive her to work and go get an alignment and corner weight after work. However as I acclerate down teh street I hear, "CLANG CLANG CLANG" from what seems like the front. THe sound frequency increases with speed. So the faster I go the faster the sound. I got her up to 2nd gear and no change. However if i reverse it makes no sound. I jacked up the front end and spun the front wheels around. No sound. I then jacked up on the passenger side front control arm to keep the arm loaded. I spun the wheel around. No sounds. I didn't do it for the driver side. I was already late for work. I need help. the only thing that changed between my test drive was: 225/50/16 Toyo RA1 moutned on stock wheels... and I wraped silicone tape around the coilover sleeve and fastened a hose clamp around it. I then zip tied (using two zip ties) to secure my front brake line to the shock since the coilovers don't ahve that stock bracket to secure the brake line. I need help. I have an appointment to do corner weighting this evening. Solo1 school is this weekend. I"m messed. My mind is F'd can someone help me? what should I do? When i get home tonight I will swap the rear wheels on the front 1 at a time hoping that one wheel has a slight run out and that is what is causing the problem (but i tried to spin the tires when the car jacked up and it didn't hit anything). 2nd thing is to mount a set of steelies I ahve with snow tires hoping that the offset is lower and hence more clearence between the inner tire wall and the springs. |

You mounted the rubber on your factory wheels, correct? I don't see how they could possibly be hitting anything. Is the clanging directly related to your travel speed or if you stay at the same speed but change gears does it get faster/slower? It sounds like driveline issues to me. D |

check your brake dust shields, I hate when I accidently bend those things while putting wheels on or off.

Could be U joints, diff, half shafts, CV joints or do I even dare whisper that it might be (shudder) transmission.

thanks for all the help. It turns out wheel and tire zone used a weird size weight for the balance and the weight was hitting the spring perch.

I thought you said that you spun the wheel with the suspension compressed? You should have noticed that there. That's why I ruled out the front wheels. Glad you figured it out. Will I be seeing you Saturday? |
