ive got an 86 with 4 lug and im converting to 5 lug. ive already got the 5-lug front and rear vented drilled and slotted rotors, calipers (from a conv.) and 5 lug rims... but i havnt been able to get ahold of an air compressor to get that huuuuuge nut off so i can get the rotors off.... what i need to know is if they have hub-assemblies or just inner and outer bearings

Welcome to nopistons.com! I moved this to the 2nd gen forum so it would get more views.
Make sure you un-bend the indented tab that holds the axle nut in place. Here's what I do to get that nut off: Use a crow bar or some other strong bar, brace it between the lugs and againt the ground to keep the hub from spinning. Then get a breaker bar (I use a pipe on the end of my ratchet) and stand on the end of it to loosen the nut. |
The rear knuckle/hub assembly has to be removed from the car to press the hub in/out. It is much more easier/efficient and economical to install a used 5 lug hub/knuckle than it is to remove the 4 lug hub/knuckle; press out the 4 lug hub and repress the 5 lug hub into place.

I say swap the whole rear subframe. With diff, axles, hubs everything from an lsd car.

Does the passenger-side hub nut on rx-7's have a left hand thread?

awesome. thanks yall... yeah i tried using a engine hoist handle as my breaker bar to get that nut off... it just wont budge... maybe ill go try a little harder. the idiots at advanced said i had inner/ outer bearings instead of hub assys. dangit! anyone know where i can find new or used hub assemblies? autopart stores and local junkyard/salvageyards in my area (central georgia) dont carry them. i cant wait to get this beast back on the road.

if i could find the entire sub-frame with lsd and 5-lug hubs and everything i would but in my area there arent any places to get them. im trying to do all the interior (pretty much done) and body work and paint before i go into performance becuase i havnt decided what i want to do yet... as far as a streetported turbo rotory or an LS2 swap....

warner robins, georgia... about 30 mins. south of macon, georgia (central area of georgia) sorry to dig up an old topic, but i just bought a '88 10AE with 4 lugs and i would like to convert to 5 lug. Is there a write up or how to anywhere? Also what is the bolt pattern on a 5 lug (114.3 x 5)? You all said in the read its bets to get the rear end out of a five lug... well in my newbieness, which years have an LSD and a 5 lug rear end? thanks again guys! |
the 4 lug cars only appeared in 86-88, and thats just for the bases. the upper models, sport, gxl, turbo all had the 5 lug setup. then all the 89-91's have 5 lugs too.
swapping the front is easy, you simply exchange rotor, wheel hubs and calipers. rear is the same except the rear hubs are pressed on |

You should swap the brake booster and proportioning valves aswell, they were different when we did my swap.
|
Is there a difference in axles with 4 and 5 lugs, LSD or not?
And what exactly do you need for 4 piston swap, I have a S4 GXL booster and SS brake lines anything else? |
