!!HELP!! 88 NA S4 Loses all power while driving!

Hey everyone i hope someone can help me out. I have a 88 RX7 NA and here is whats going on.

Ill be driving down the road and i will lose all power expect headlights and tail lights flashers. If i wait a few mins power comes back. Ive checked all the fuses and they are all good. check the battery connections also. When i got this car it has just has the MAIN Relay replaced and a new ignition switch. If someone can point me in the right direction it would help alot. I think it might be a ground for the main relay or something with the theft deterrent system but not sure. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a short to me. Hard to really tell you where a short is, but some things to check would be areas you worked on last.

Check all grounds. Don't just look at them. Grab them and tug/pull because they may appear to be solid, but as soon as you touch they might break off or crumble away to nothing. Assuming they are solid clean up the ends. One might even try to add more grounds to the block and frame. I believe doing so also fixes the 3800 rpm hesitation on some cars as well. Pull back some of the insulation and make sure the wire is a healthy copper color and not green or gray colored and then seal it back up with electrical tape. Preferably the rubber type if possible, but it is sometimes hard to find. If you are handy with a voltmeter check continuity and voltage as soon as you lose power. Your alternator may be going off line and draining the battery to almost nothing, then charging again once it cools. 12.6 volts on a healthy battery when not running and fully charged, and around/over 14 volts when charging. Hope it helps!:)

Ive done about all that. Just been trying to find all the grounds. I am an electrician for aircraft but i cant seem to find the right diagrams for my 88 NA FC. I have tested the alternator when the car was running and the battery those all test good. I think it is the ground for the main relay but i cant find it. Anyone know where it is at?

if the FSM's are still working they have the links here on the forum for diagrams as far as the lack of power try checking the air filter change the fuel filter check the cat and change your 02 sensor are all a bunch of basic things to do besides checking the grounds

Im not talking about lack of performance power, im talking about electrical power.

Can't remember if there are fusible links somewhere in the circuit, but if you know someone with access to All Data Pro or Mitchell One those would show for sure. Wish I still had access to them. Autozone has Alldata, but I don't know how in depth they can go. Just throwing this out there but the alt belt has the correct tension? Mine would move on me from time to time.:hahano:

Yes it does, Im going to go threw the can and redo all the ground this weekend as per the grounding thread on here and hopes it helps. I know for sure there is no ground on the Alternator bracket and none on the trans.

my answer was kinda pointed at both electrical and performance but fsm's will help you trace the wires out
