hello i just bought a 1987 rx7 turbo2 it ran great when i got it (fresh rebuilt engine)..until one day i was cruising down the highway and i heard a loud popping noise from the exhaust. i managed to drive home and i noticed that the car will not idle unless my foot is on the throttle and it backfires really bad..but if i give it about quarter throttle and bring up the rpms at or above 3500 it runs great all the way to redline but as soon as i let off the gas it backfires really loud a few times and falls on its face. anyone had this similar problem or have any idea what it could be? thank you in advance

What are you running for an ecu ? It sounds like a timing issue. At least this will bump you back up.

I would agree that timing would be the first thing I would look at, but your statement that above 3500 RPM it clears up confuses that. I'd going to say you have a bad primary injector. About 3800 RPM the seconday's kick in, so that would clear that up. But this is easy enough to prove, just swap your primary and secondary injectors. I had a bad seconday injector... And had danced all around the issue. Changes plugs / wires etc.. The car ran great until you pushed it beyond 3800 RPM and then it fell flat on it's face. With the backfiring I'd going to guess that one of your proimary injectors is stuck open and dripping fuel out of it. |

Is it possible that this could be a blown apex seal? the car doesnt even smoke except a tiny lil bit of white when u stomp on the throttle. |
yep the problem may be with the injectors what you should do is get down to the nitty gritty and take them out and check the o rings as well to make sure that they are still soft and not damaged and they are keeping a seal then look for any gas leaks coming from anywhere if all looks good then it is your injector hope i helped if you cannot find a new or used injector swap your primaries with your secondaries
