And thanks for all the compliments guys. I just finished the other side today. Here are the pics:

This duct will feed cold air to my header, which will have a small aluminum box built around it to keep its heat from radiating around inside the engine bay and heating up the intake manifolds. The duct will cross the fan shroud and swing downward beside the air pump, under the AFM intake tube.

All in the name of volumetric efficiency . . . anyone notice how your engine has more pep when cold? Once those intake parts absorb the engine heat, intake temperatures rise, allowing in less oxygen for a given atmospheric pressure and engine speed.

You have lots of time on your hands huh?

88IntegraLS 09-01-2003 08:23 PM

A victim of ambition! My crazy ideas start controlling my life until I end up making stuff like the bumper, or paint job, street port, battery box under the bin, etc. I can't let the one time in my life when I had a garage at my complete disposal slip away without my RX-7 being a beneficiary in every way possible. So what I am saying is, I am an opportunist. My FC is just a simulation for me . . practice for a future small business probably. You have to make the most of what you have and take a plunge to get anywhere in life. Here I am!

FCmaniac 09-02-2003 07:52 AM

Great work.. you've inspired me to do something with my brake duct now. Also, I was thinking about getting thermo tec wrap for the header. Why the aluminum box idea vs. header wrap?

MazdaEnthused 09-02-2003 04:34 PM

that was some ingenious speaking in which most was not understood because of the lact of english (LOL yes very inpiring words)

Actually, I will be using 2" header wrap under the box. I will probably have about three layers of the wrap on the header before I use up the whole roll, and I will probably spray the wrap with some kind of sealing coating (which is recommended by the instructions which came with the wrap).

This might seem a bit much, but so is everything I do. Cooler engine bay temps create cooler intake air temps. Cooler intake air temps make more power. This is why turbo guys pay $$ for front mount intercoolers.

I will probably spray my intake manifold with some kind of ceramic paint (maybe even on the inside, too). Mazdaspeed7 coats the insides of his ports with a ceramic coating which I am too cheap to buy ($200 from Aircraftspruce.com) and I think he has the same idea as me: to insulate the intake air from hot engine parts so it won't heat up on its way into the engine.

Making power with an NA engine is simple but sophisticated. There are many tricks. This is why the original 10A rotary made over 120ish hp before it was detuned for American consumption. The first 12a's were the same way . . . detuned in later years down to a dreary 100hp.

One reason the 13B from the Gsl-Se is 10hp shy of the FC version is the curved runners at the top of the S4 intake manifold, along with thinner apex seals and lighter rotors. Little details like that add up. As you can see, I love focusing on the details.

I hope my writing is understandable. I try to write to the best of my ability.

Baldy 09-03-2003 08:03 AM

That's some great information, I'm going to have to start thinking about that kind of stuff.

Your writing is completely understandable to me.

im stuck inbetween the air duck and the whole headlight conversion. its hte non pop up lights. they look like the 2003 nsx with no pop up. ive never seen that on an fc.

gazellis 09-11-2003 08:55 AM

ive never seen that on an fc.

RX-7.com has a photo of the round lights that don't pop-up on an fc. Now the FC pictured has a body kit on it that makes it look like a porsche but you can see the lights. It is in the 2nd gen catalog section under lighting.

ROTARYROCKET7 09-12-2003 04:35 PM

YEAH I ALSO have a COrksport headlight duct which i sanded down and have it real nice and smooth but i was getting ready to install it and the screws holding down the headlight cover are stripped so i have to extract it. There real nice though. Mines cost me like $96 shipping and evthing

88IntegraLS - I dont like the fact that the brake ducts are now rendered useless. I like to do a lot fo open track days and kind of need my front brakes to keep cool. The main reason I ditched the Greddy FMIC its piping blocked off the brake ducts.

I have a Mariah Cold ari box with added insulation and I am in the process of getting the headlight cover painted. I am not too worried about night time conditions as all of my open track days are well in the daytime.

Still a cool idea though 88IntegraLS.

This is an awesome idea if your just into 1/4 mile though.

yeah, I prefer functional brake ducts too.

88IntegraLS 09-12-2003 06:46 PM

True, I chose a compromise and ditched the brake ducts which directed airflow toward the splash guards covering the rotors. I am a sports car enthusiast, autocross rookie and too poor for real track driving.

FC3Slider 09-12-2003 10:45 PM

well, you could have saved the brake ducts but making a whole nother hole in your bumper. that is my plan to do when i get my t2. i will go to a wrecking yard and just find out the best route from filter to bumper, with minimal cutting. that is my goal.

or... you could have cut an extra hole into your brake ducts, say in the middle, and use some of the air ment to go to the brake ducts.

i have more theories because i have been thinking about somethign like this for awhile, but didnt want to waste my time on my n/a 86.

Apex13B 09-13-2003 06:49 AM

i doubt that you will get any sort of ram air effect with that setup. Its set back in a low-pressure area. Ram-air only works at extreme high speeds. It will be a good cold air setup though.

What makes you think thats a low pressure area?

Ahem. Why did Mazda put the radiator inlet in that area if it was low pressure?

No offense, but you have jumped in my **** before and seem to have a habit of doing it to a few people . . What is the reason for this? Have I ever insulted you?

FCmaniac 09-13-2003 02:47 PM

Let me know if you're going to make anymore of those bumpers... I want one.
