i was told that the width of the stock unit is odd compared to aftermarket head units..is this true? if so what do i need to do to get a after market unit of average size to fit properly?

spaceman Spiff 06-18-2005 11:15 AM

well if you break the little plastic surround thingy then you will have extra room around it and just have a professional install the head unit but watch them very carefully, they should have all of the covers and such.

CrassFC3S 06-18-2005 12:46 PM

no, its not weird my dad was the manager of the roadshop the car audio portion of circuit city for 12 years hehe and he did my install and didnt mention it being weird. its just a normal single din head unit =D

Rob x-7 06-18-2005 04:26 PM

width isnt a problem unless you had the little amp thing like the verts had, then its a bit wider

spaceman Spiff 06-18-2005 05:06 PM

its only single din if you leave the eq or the tape deck or something.

75 Repu 06-18-2005 09:51 PM

depending on the sound system your car came with it may be single din or double din.. i installed one on the vert a while back.. nothing odd about it.. i got rid of it later though cuz the way the radio didnt seem to fit in with the rest of the dash bothered the hell out of me..

CrassFC3S 06-18-2005 10:56 PM

well they sell double din head units with some cool **** for the extra room it takes up , mine is single din =D

Dramon_Killer 06-19-2005 02:54 AM

sonick117x 06-19-2005 08:20 AM

i know its double din.. i just didnt know if it was too wide or something odd like that.. but thanks for your help guys... dramon.. what are you talkin bout?

ROTARYROCKET7 06-19-2005 12:22 PM

i bought my sony xplod head unit and it fit right in

Dramon_Killer 06-19-2005 02:47 PM

its an aluminum cd player holder with 3 52mm gauge spots underneath it.

sonick117x 06-19-2005 04:47 PM

where could i get one like that? and do they make one with a switch panel under it?

TrboSpdAnt 06-21-2005 11:52 AM

I don't know about that w/ the switchpanel.

The only real odd thing about these headunits, isn't the WIDTH. If you have a double- or triple-din headunit, it's being held in by this cage. The units screw to that, and that to the console.

My 86 GXL has a triple-din: Radio, Tape Deck, and EQ. All three are the same width, but when I went to change out head units...

I noticed the CAGE doesn't screw on to every aftermarker headunit. The holes that are set up for the stock headunit are in a different place then the holes on the aftermarket deck.

The only thing I noticed is that there is not much extra depth for the wiring.

I needed most or the bottom bay for wiring space.
