I just rebuilt the motor that blew in my car and now I am having a couple of problems with it. I can't get it to start. I have spark, fuel, and some compression. I measured the compression and it was 60 psi, on all three faces of the front and rear rotors. It seems that I can't get it started, and I was wondering if any of you guys had any tips on getting a new motor to start.

Thanks

David

does it crank and crank ? please be a little more descriptive

RotaryManRX7 08-05-2002 07:47 PM

Yeah it cracks just fine, it tunes over at or above as it did while it was running before.

Felix Wankel 08-05-2002 07:51 PM

New seals and old housings?

vosko 08-05-2002 07:51 PM

pull EGI fuse. crank a few times. then reinstall. try the deflooding procedure and see if that works....

Is it spinning quickly enough? 60 PSI is pretty low.

RotaryManRX7 08-05-2002 10:21 PM

Sorry double post.

Yeah, I think it is. It is spinning just as fast or faster then it did before it blew up. That is 60 psi with the TB closed now that I think about it. But should that matter that much?

Felix

I am using all new rotor housings and all of the seals are new.

Thanks for all your help.

I would do the soaked plug trick.

Pull the lower plugs all the way off the boot. The Spark will jump the gap in the boot and fire the fuel soaked plug. I had to do that to mine to get it fire up the first time.

You have to pull the boots way off. I did it with a friend cranking the engine.

Can always do the tried and true drag it behind another car start.

Rotaryman88 08-06-2002 01:10 AM

Bump start that thing...it should work!

Hows your timing? if everythings all good you're probably flooded... how do the plugs look? are they wet? you could also try putting a little bit of oil in the housing to help bump up compression.

Yeah, the timing is important. Make sure that the air flow meter is plugged in and has a good connection to the inlet tube.

pengaru 08-06-2002 12:51 PM

I don't understand why your compression is so low, you must have the engine flooded. de-flood it by pulling the egi fuse and cranking it for a long time. Then put some oil in the spark plug holes and crank it over a couple more times still with EGI disonnected, this should help get some compression.

only do this of course after you have verified you're getting spark etc. Don't let it sit too long after getting flooded without running, the fuel will wash away any lubricants and you might find yourself with some stuck apex seals :( marvels mystery oil could be used too.

His compression is low because its a new motor isnt it? I know when me and Jim got the other convertible running this week, we had to crank it quite a bit until it sounded normal without fuel going to the engine, then when it sounded normal, we plugged the fuel back in and it fired up. The timing also played a part as well. Check all these things, I think alot of people have a bit of trouble getting them to fire up for the first time. Use a good battery starter, not jumper cables, run the starter for 15-20 sec intervals giving the starter time to cool off in between, in worse case scenarios you can run 24 volts right to the starter to get it to really crank the **** out of the engine, try some ATF/ marvel mystery oil in the crankcase as well.

I am also inclined to tell you to first check the timing. If your compression reading was taken holding down the release button it should be ok. It always reads low when I do it that way.

all three of my engines in the TII fired up first time even the two jspecs :o

first low compression engine last six months and 10k miles...... that one i resurrected from the dead LOL. second jspec was PRE-BLOWN.... third one is perfect . you know what they say third time is the charm :bigok:

horn4858 08-07-2002 07:41 PM

last 2 i put in were hell to get running but after that they cranked easy. we had to remove leading plugs and deflood them. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R

horn4858 08-07-2002 07:46 PM

yea need charger on battery and a good starter

horn4858 08-07-2002 07:54 PM

line up marks on crank sensor at gear remove cover and u can hold it in position while u lower it in and verify its position when its seated. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/mellow.png
