okay, so my stuff came in the mail https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif and even though the top of the gauge is dented, i'm still happy. anyway, i was looking over the directions, and it says to tap a hole for the sensor in the exhaust manifold (they show headers). should i still drill and tap a hole in the exhaust manifold before the turbo, or should i do it in the downpipe after the turbo?

also, the wiring shows 4 wires for the harness: red for constant power, orange for ignition, white for parking lights, and black for ground. do i really need to tap into all those wires to use this thing, or can i just run a wire from the fuse box to the harness, another wire from the existing boost gauge light switch for power, and neglect the ignition and just ground the same as my boost gauge?

no rush on this, this is a later project (two weeks down the road, maybe after i get my RB exhaust depending on tap location).

well, i was looking at the FSM, and i seems the ignition might not be so hard to tap into. now as for the 12V power, can i just run power from the fuse box, it is close after all. and the parking lights, what is this purpose on hooking up the white wire to them? i'd rather have a switch running all this, at least i'm in control, and when i flip it on, people alway gots to ask "what's it for" then i get to talk about my car https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

the parking lights is so it will light up at night

RX7Aggie 06-07-2003 12:17 AM

so can i just run a 12V switch to the white wire? i already have to flip one to get the boost gauge to light up, can i do the same for the EGT?

Seppuku 06-07-2003 12:19 AM

yeah you can hook it up to any power source. I would just tap into the light for the cigerate lighter.

RX7Aggie 06-07-2003 01:34 AM

so this thing uses 3 power sources: one constant 12V, one source from the ignition, and one for the lights? seems like a lot. does the ignition source just turn it on, or does it actually give it power. can i just splice into my ignition wires, or should i involve the fuse box under the dash?

The ignition wire is the power to the gauge if I remember right (been a few months since I installed one of these) you do not have to hook it up to the ignition itself, but an ignition controlled power source. So all you have to do is find a fuse that gets its power when the ignition is in the run position and you will be fine from there.

Exhaust probe is best mounted within one inch of the mating surface of the turbo and the exhaust manifold. Most people put it just after the mounting flange on the turbo itself. You have to drill and tap the exhaust housing to accept the probe.

hope this helps

on a S4 manifold I've seen the EGT probe put in where the twin scroll was (as in the twin scroll has been removed)

on a s5 being divided you can't put it in the manifold or you'd only be seeing EGT's for either the front or rear rotor which is why mine is placed next to the o2 sensor in my downpipe

it's not that hard to wire up 4 wires :P I tapped the 12v constant and ignition off my Turbo Timer harness and then light came from a wire i had tapped to my cig lighter light. And well a ground isn't hard to make/find.

It's worthwhile i've been very impressed and happy with my GReddy EGT and boost gauge.. tad more accurate than my autometer disco light and boost gauge had been.

thanks for the help everyone! well, i'm starting the project today, and seeing as how i just want to get this hooked up and running first, and how i will most likely change out my exhaust to RB, i'm going to just stick it in the down pipe as close to the turbo as possible. i'll just use this to make sure i hooked it up right and to kind of show it off. when i get a new exhaust system, then i'll stick it in the manifold. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

well, i pulled out my old boost gauge, which i realized is NOT 2", so i'll have to buy a new one. i also found on my Turbo Timer harness, there are 2 spare 12V and ignition wires just asking to be tapped into, even complete with female connectors already on them. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png so off to the store i go to buy some more electronics equipment.
