Hi everybody,

I'm putting in the '85 GSL-SE (?) injectors right now (more flow same otherwise, right?) and I'm replacing the six port valve, it's busted. I've got some pineapple sleeves I'm gonna throw in. Already got an atkin's street ported motor, racing beat headers/presilencer/catback. I'm looking for any ideas on cool things I can do while I'm down there. I'm on a fairly limited budget and I'd like to be done in a week or so. I'm not going to crazy with things by the way. I'm just looking for ~200 HP (at the wheel would be nice https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR , but I'm not really expecting that https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png )

680cc secondaries in an n/a with nothing to correct for the extra fuel is just going to be really rich. I think the car is going to bog down some at 3800rpms. If you wanted to replace all 4 injectors with 550cc injectors (from a TII) you could but really you would still need something to correct for the extra fuel, you really just need a new computer with a decient base map and then do some fine tuning. You might get away with 4 550cc injectors on the stock tune, but I think it will still be a bit fat at times. I could be wrong though. I have seen n/a rx7s run with 550's and no porting.

Check/replace all the vacuum hoses, and oil metering lines. Also inspect/replace the coolant line that goes from the rear housing to the throttle body, to the water pump. Inspect/replace the fuel pulsation damper.

There's a ground that connects to the base of the Y-shaped intake support bracket on the driver's side, make sure that grounding spot is clean and has good contact.

ummmmm that's all I can think of.

@wankelltII - I don't think that I got 680cc injectors, I could be wrong, I've had them for a year now and still haven't used them. As far as I have heard from some racing guys as well as what I saw on a site a while back, the '85 gslse injectors will be accomadated by the stock computer. It just cuts back fuel flow based on o2 sensor readings, and it should be within its limits, I'll let everyone know. As far as running rich, it's already been rich for years https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png How much worse can it be?

You're right, an new computer would be great, but I'm not going there yet, maybe next year. I want to see what I can do with this car, without going to far from stock. Then I'm gonna go crazy https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/cool.png

@baldy - the pulsation damper is really expensive, if mine is not leaking and looks clean is it o.k? Could it also be a reason I'm running rich, I've heard of that. And thanks for mentioning that ground, I didn't notice that one yet, though it might have moved... this car has had alot of motors in it's day. My Atkin's is the 3rd I've put in...the other two were used/junkyard motors that I didn't get lucky on https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png I think the previous owner put two in it, but did dumb things, like disconnect the metering pump from the throttle linkage, because he heard it would get more power. What a dumbass.

Does anyone know any good tricks for rejuvinating hoses? I've had good luck over the with periodically spraying Tire-Foam on the hoses after an engine wash. I would replace a bad hose, but I think that the tire foam works great for hoses that aren't too bad. My radiator hoses are in great shape still, even after 3 or 4 engine swaps and a radiator swap, and nine years of me owning it, who knows how long before that since they were replaced, if at all.

My engine wiring harnesses on the other hand are crumbling. Any suggestions on what to rewrap them with. Preferably something I can find around in a decent size town, not electrical tape?

Thanks everyone https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

read up about the rats nest removal and get rid of some of the mess. inspect the MOP lines or remove if you want to premix.

Baldy 06-09-2006 07:40 AM

For rubber lines, I just see if they're flexible at all. If they're hard or cracked, I replace. Not sure if that's the best way, but that's how I guage it.

Buy the wrap from Banzai (see link for rotary innovation at the bottom). I haven't bought a role yet, but I got to use it once, it's very nice.

If you haven't removed anything yet, while the car is running you supposedly can feel the PD doing its pulsing. If the stuff is apart, you should be able to see if it has been leaking or not, just by the appearance around the end of the fuel rail, and the space under the PD.

don't put in different injectors. if you are running rich why put in bigger ones? the stock ecu will not control them right. your main issue if you want more power is how to get more air in the engine instead of fuel. my advice would be to get the stock injectors cleaned, replace as many vacuum hose as possible, check all the sensors to specs, clean your port runners so your new sleeves won't bind up, and get a electronically controlled aux port system going. the stock actuation system won't work correctly with your exhaust system anyway...assuming you have a series 4 car.

My running rich problem, I'm quite sure is not related to the injectors currently other than their leakiness, and my old worn out o2 sensor.

After pulling the intake manifold, I realized that I had no inserts or sleeves on the 5/6 ports? Apparently the guy I worked for, who did most of the work moving stuff from the old engine to the short block forgot those. My understanding is that removing these increases high end pep, at the expense of low end torque, is that right? I liked what little torque my old motor had over this one, could that be a noticable issue, or is it really just a tiny little thing you only notice during "spirited" driving?

@BigTurbo, just out of curiosity, are you speaking with experience or just common sense about the ECU not controlling the injectors right. I understand the sense of what you say, but I have most definitely heard otherwise from some local guys and on other forums in the past. I don't expect my setup to take full advantage of the bigger injectors, it should just give me potential for later, when I do increase airflow.

I've been on the fence about the rats nest removal, mostly because I've never found a good writeup of how to do it. I'll check into it. I've got a couple days before all the gaskets and what not come in. I'll figure out what to do by then.

Oh.... If I do keep the stock injectors, or go back to them, who does everyone recommend for injector rebuilding... mine are leaky and I'm pretty sure all around out of whack, I forgot to mention that earlier in the thread.

Thanks to everyone for their help and opinions. Everything has been duly noted or thought of already.

Baldy 06-13-2006 07:49 AM

I used a local place to clean/calibrate my injectors, got them back the same day. You might want to try calling around locally.

Otherwise, most other folks use RC Engineering.
