Hey everyone, I am new and thinking of buying a 1987 mazda rx7. I would just like to know if this is a good deal or would I be getting ripped from the dealer? I test drove it today and everything seemed fine accept the engine had a little miss, is this normal for these engines? thanks everyone!

Wow! The car looks very nice, but the price looks high to my eye. The engine should not miss, unless you mean at idle. The rotary will often have an inconsistent idle, but under acceleration, the car should pull smoothly to redline, without any miss whatsoever.

mitchanger 10-07-2009 06:18 PM

Yeah, it was only at idle that it missed. Underneath looked perfect and the last owner had it for 15 years and he was a 50 year old man so they say..

holy fuckers 5 grand for a 87!

Looks clean but damn!

mitchanger 10-07-2009 09:55 PM

there are records of the car for the last 12 years everything was taken to the mazda dealership for work. I'm on the fence with this car.

You could offer less?

mitchanger 10-08-2009 07:26 PM

Oh yes for sure, the more I look at the car the more I want it, I think I am going to get it within the next few weeks if it dose not sell.

Oh opps..... still.... I would probably pay that much for a nice TII or a 10th aniv.

RicerJ 10-09-2009 12:02 AM

price does seem high and also you would have the ugly red interior

mitchanger 10-09-2009 10:33 AM

I found this also. just worried that it was beat on.

I wonder what an '86 Turbo II parts car looks like? First year for the Turbo II, in the states at least, was '87.

mitchanger 10-09-2009 05:19 PM

What is the difference in a Tll and a gxl. besides the turbo of course?

the gxl has different seats, the auto adjusting suspension, ac and ps are standard, power everything.

the turbo has the turbo, power almost everything, the power steering is an option until 89, then abs and ps get added

it was, they all were

mitchanger 10-09-2009 06:25 PM

great thanks! I think I would rather the one from the dealer ship then. turbo can be added https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/happy.gif

fc3s4utnv 10-09-2009 07:09 PM

if you want a turbo rx7, start with one, trust me, you will spend 3 times more money turbocharging a na.

RotorDad 10-09-2009 09:47 PM

Clean car, but 5 g's is too high in my opinion & I don't like the wing. I also agree no matter what type of car you look at if you want a turbo car & there is a turbo version offered then just buy the turbo model.

You forgot lower compression rotors, stronger transmission, and the aluminum hood! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

The guy emailed me back and said there is some rust but not to much..

donhayes 10-13-2009 12:10 AM

Rust is very common on these old Japanese cars. Don't pay 5K for a N/A car. Its not worth it in the long run especially if you want to hop it up. Too much money spent getting nowhere fast. Buy the turbo and repaint that fender.

RicerJ 10-13-2009 02:36 AM

buy the turbo replace the diff with the fd one and have a little fun

Why replace the TII diff with an FD one? Isn't the TII diff stronger? I recall FD guys getting rid of their diff, and bolting on the TII diff.

mitchanger 10-13-2009 09:57 AM

unless the price goes down on the n/a I think im going to get the turbo, I was talking to the guy last night the white one for parts is rusted to hell he said its been parked on grass for a long time and the frame is gone.

unless you are throwing down some crazy numbers you the fd diff is good and you dont have to buy clutches to rebuild it or anything it acts like a posi rear end

Yeah, but the TII doesn't come with an FD diff? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

I'd be sure I knew exactly what "some rust" was before I bought the car.
