If you still have cats they will clog...

rx7kid2gtt 01-13-2004 03:22 PM

****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i just put all new cats on about 6 mouths ago. do you think thay are fucked

sidewinderx7 01-13-2004 03:47 PM

probably.

But it couldn't hurt to remove them and inspect them, then either put a pipe in place or get an air pump.

have you noticed any downturn in the car's performance since you put the new cats on?

rx7kid2gtt 01-13-2004 04:21 PM

no it was a lot better when i put them on

Baldy 01-14-2004 07:54 AM

from what I understand, if it was clogged, you would notice performance decreasing. You might just want to get a smog pump put back on. I'm sure there are a ton of them floating around here.

sorry i am floating around here to learn more about the 2nd gens.. dont you need the smog pump on some 6 ports?

MazdaMike 01-14-2004 11:33 AM

i had my main cat (fd) for almost 7 months without an airpump(removed not disabled) and i saw no problems but eventually ur cat will clog due to lack of air at lower rpm. if u do a lot of highway driving u might not even have to worry but wither way id sugest wither fix the pump if u wanna pass emissions or do what i did and get a midpipe

If you mean to activate the auxiliary ports, then yes, you need then on the S5 n/a FC's. (confused by this? check here) The S4 n/a FC's use exhaust back pressure to activate these.

If I'm wrong, someone please correct me. I'd hate to misinform some one.

5&6 ports are opened by actuators that that hook to your cats via a nipple or a bung. When you reach a certain RPM @3800-4,000 you have enough back presure 1.2-2 PSI to open the ports. If you replace your cats you need to weld a nipple or a bung into the pipe so you can connect your actuators up. Otherwise they do not open. Or you can do the unspeakable which is leave them open all the time which takes away from low end torque... YUK!
