I just put my rx back on the road, I replaced the plugs and wires, timing checked. I needed a new battery and borrowed a small one from a friend. Anyway I went to start it today and it barely started. I had to hold down the ignition for about a minute then finally it caught. After it started a huge puff of white smoke came out the exhaust "never seen this before" I suspect that the battery is the problem for starting maybe did not have enough power, is the white smoke from flooding?

Yes. The FC's need atleast 750 cold cranking amps to start ... IF you have lower than that, it will take a while to start, cause it's not turning the motor fast enough to catch. After a couple turns your motor will flood, causeing the white smoke. Get a proper battery. and you'll be fine.

I am getting an Optima Deep cell ultra batt. 1000 CCA. OoOooO that sucker is gunna crank after that.

I have a standard 750 right now. and well. Im not satisfied. I am also looking for a hightech (more powerul altenator... anyone know what type to get? the standard just isnt cutting it. The FC cars have problems with the electrical system allready, i figure get a high quality Alt and Batt and i should be safe.

isnt white smoke coolant?

MazdaMike 04-08-2003 10:05 PM

i aint no guru but couldnt that smoke be from exess fuel that wasnt ignited while he was cranking his engine for the 59seconds before it actually started? then again white isnt a good thing when it comes to the 13b

white continues smokes is a sighn of coolant. but it sounds like he flooded the engine. what probaly happened was that he ran it for a second while it was cold for a few second moved it to where he wanted and turned it off. You have to start you car and warm it up to operationing temperature. If you don't after you shut down the car after only a few seconds from a cold start up the ECU still thinks thats its starting up so it dumps a whole lot of fuel in{I.E.} flooding the car. sorta bad design of mazdas part. you can get a ignition box so that you really don't have to worry about it or next time it happens after you flood it disconnect the negative battery terminal , reseting the ecu. unplugg the EGI ciruit to cut the fuel and ignition and crank it over 10- 20 times to get all the fuel out. Plug the EGI back in and she sould start up again. if not go to rx7.com they have a good unflooding process in the tech notes. but if you do have white smoke watch for coolant run off and having to add water every 5-100 miles. if you have these its https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR engine rebuild time.
