ok i filled my tank completely up for the first time since i have owned my 88 gxl, only has 70,000 miles on it now and i put 87 octane in it today. i drove 24 miles and it was reading only 3/4 of a tank. think my gas gauge is bad , theres no leak or no visible leak anywhere? what could be causing this? the car runs perfect!!!!! help before i spend a hundred bucks this week on gas,lol https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/Wow1.gif

ILUVMY88CABRIO 04-28-2002 07:08 PM

Did you have your foot into it alot?

I'm happy that I've driven 160 miles (mostly on the freeway) and still have a half tank in my vert.

sleeperRX7 04-28-2002 08:52 PM

no i was driving it easy as hell i didnt go over 4 grand.i dont know whats wrong? maybe someone stole some of it,lmao

waste ricers,allof them!!!!!!!!!! :teufel:

ILUVMY88CABRIO 04-28-2002 09:18 PM

Did you reset your trip odometer when you filled up? If not try doing that. See how many miles you get to a full tank.

sleeperRX7 04-29-2002 05:46 PM

as soon as i filled it up i set set the trip odometer, as of right now it shows 99 miles at half a tank of 87 octane,im gonna replace my O2 sensor and see if that helps, maybe its the maf sensor? i dunno ill see if replacing the O2 sensor helps first. i just dont ge it the car runs strong as hell and is perfectly sound. o well gotta love rotary i guess

waste ricers,all of them!!!!!!!!!!! :teufel:

These cars gas gauges are quick to half, then they slow down a bit after that, go fill your tank now if youre nervous, and as long as youre getting 15+ MPG I wouldnt worry about it too much.

Good point there Rob, mine is also quick to get to half. I'd say about 90 miles too, from full to 3/4, maybe less and then drop down slowly.

ILUVMY88CABRIO 04-30-2002 01:21 AM

I now have 220+ miles, and still got over a 1/4 tank. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png That is real good for my vert.

90N/A Rex 04-30-2002 07:29 AM

Hmmm.......Mine is slow to half (like most cars) and quick after half a tank??? . I get about 270-310 miles per tank. I fill up every time I get gas and do my mileage.

Turbo II 04-30-2002 03:08 PM

Man, I'd love to be getting that kinda of gas milage. I get about 115 to a full tank. Really sucks doesnt it!!!!!!! :out:

crx7cm 04-30-2002 05:02 PM

man mine is slow to 1/2 too and then divebombs... the damn fuel light comes on a little under 1/2!! Cant trust it! :director:

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blush.png By the way, I always fill, and rely on the trip to calculate how much gas I have left, and the gauge of course, cant be to safe when you put as little mileage on the car as I do ( 2000 miles last year )

foopy 05-01-2002 12:26 PM

oh good i thought i was the only one getting ultra $h*tty mpg. full tank is like 180 miles. 16 gallon tank? barely 10mpg. but yea its really quick to half. my tanks reads 1/2 after only like 60 miles. i thought i was getting 120 per fill up and got REALLY scared. but it slowed down. maybe im driving like crap? what is most efficent way to drive/shift? always below 3k? hey what if i went rite into 4th after 10mph? i mean i dont accelarate fast, but im only using like 800rpm. hehe.

I dont evenpush my hard right now. I keep it at 3 grand and shift. And thats the kind of shitty gas mileage i get.

My friend once had his fuel pressure regulator go bad, and it was holding way too much fuel. If there aren't any leaks then it's got to have something to do with the regulator, pump, injectors, etc. If the motor has low compression then it's possible to get poor gas mileage. One time the wire on my O2 sensor was coming loose, and after I fixed it the car ran better. Are you SURE there aren't any leaks? You may have a leak in a hose under the car.

ILUVMY88CABRIO 05-01-2002 02:29 PM

I ended up gettig about 265 miles out of my full tank. That is really good for my car.

90N/A Rex 05-01-2002 04:46 PM

I shift between 4k and 7k depending. Never before 4k. and I am getting 21mpg. I would definitely try the easy stuff. O2 sensor can get you really poor mileage. Plugs, wires, fuel filter. All the normal stuff.

Powerpack 05-01-2002 06:05 PM

I was always getting 19 mpg average and 23 mpg on a long road trip before I remove my cat (it was partially clogged). Last weekend I went on a long trip 1100 miles and I got 27 mpg, it means about 350 miles for a tank. :thumbs-up: I always shift between 4k and 6k, I shift down as soon as I need to accelarate when it is under 3k. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/happy.png

ok today i was on empty and my trip odometer read 220 miles to a full tank of 87 octane gas. my car is the 88 gxl. the car isnt even turbo!!!!! my gas milage sucks ass,i havnt repleced the o2 sensor yet or the fuel filter yet,i need some more money. i have the racing beat down pipe and presilencer which i havnt installed yet,(i work way to much, lol im still in hish school on y 14 more days and i done forever!!!!! just thought id share that) anyways i should get about 300 miles to a tank and i completely checked the car for any gas leaks and theres none, so the fuel pressure reg could also cause bad gas mialge? gonna have to replace that too. i do not push this car hard it only has 70,00 miles on it now and its gotta last me 2 years thorugh college! ive raced a couple people but im done doing that until i have some $$$$$ to fix crap in case i break something. i always shift at 4 - 6 grand. 220 miles to a full tank is not good espeacially for being stock!!!!! help!!!!!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/mecry.gif

waste ricers, all of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! god damn it feels to do drive a 7!!!!!!!! legends and sevens never die, rotaries dont get whipped like piston crap!!!!!!!!!!!! die piston motors, die die die die die die die....................yeah im really tired right now. piece

220 miles is not too bad, almost 14 mpg. If I fill up my tank, and just do a lot of city driving I'm lucky to get 200 miles out of a full tank. Last night I put $5 of gas in my vert (87 oct. @ $1.35 a gal.) I've put 24 miles on my car, and need to get gas before I go to work tomorrow. But most of that 24 miles was with my foot into it, and that burnout didn't help. :teufel:

1988RedT2 05-02-2002 12:34 PM

Hey, the whole gas mileage thing is all relative. I hear a healthy turbo II will get about 17 mpg with "normal" driving. I figure an N/A would get around 23. My other "just for fun" vehicle is an '87 Chevy C30 duallie pickup with a 350 and it gets 10 mpg on a good day, which is about the same as my wife's '78 L-82 Vette. For a high-performance machine, the RX-7 seems pretty thrifty. As soon as I get my car legal, I'll let y'all know what kind of mileage it's getting.

p.s.: Don't overlook dragging brake calipers when looking for a reason for lousy gas mileage. ???

Powerpack 05-02-2002 10:20 PM

hey...I just realized today that my brother made a mistake when he read the trip counter, he has mistaken a 3 for a 8 (it was at night), it means I only got 20.5 mpg on that long road trip instead of 27 mpg. It also means the fact I removed the cat hasn't changed anything on fuel economy, but changed alot on power. In fact I even think that wiring the 5th and 6th ports open had a negative effect on fuel economy since I used to get 23 mpg on long road trip.

alton316 05-02-2002 11:38 PM

Your right there, My wifes 87 NA gets around 21 mpg

while on the other hand my 74 ford ranchero with a 460

gets 8 mpg thats on the freeway going down hill with

the wind to my back. (but once i catch up with her i leave

her way way way behind lol)

my TII got pretty good gas mileage on the highway when i wasn't going for landspeed records https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/devil.gif

well, if you are standing in front of the car and look down the left side of the engine to the exhaust manifold you will see wires going into the O2 sensor. It goes into the pipe before the cat.

As for price, new mazda one is kinda expensive and Bosch sells a one wire universal that will work for like $30.

I am sure there is a test for it but if you haven't replaced it, just replace it. They go bad and it is good to change out. Especially if you haven't been getting the kinda mileage you used to. Its one of those things that isn't worth testing. If it has been in there for a long time or you haven't changed it since you have owned the car, swap it out.

Oh yeah, buy yourself a O2 socket and a long extension to make it easier.
