Hello noobie here! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blush.gif

I have a 1986 GXL and it has some fuel delivery issues. I have tested the fuel pump on the battery and it is making a nice whirring noise, the fuse is good, but I am still getting nothing. I tested the fuel pump relay on the driver's side under the hood and I have 12v going in but nothing coming out. I tried using a test light on it as well but it never came on. Has anyone else ever tested this relay and am I doing something wrong when testing it? I bought a new one and it is giving the same readings. I know that it is possible that I received a defective relay but I just want to make sure that I am testing it correctly. Sorry if this is a question that has been asked before but I haven't been able to find any on it.

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

Okay...I was told by a mechanic that the relay not functioning properly could be caused by a bad ground. I will search for my grounds, clean them up and see if that fixes the problem. I will let you all know how it goes...from there I will hopefully have a running car! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif

also check the "circuit opening relay" under the dash, thats the one that is actually more like what we would call a fuel pump relay

Thanks for the reply, I will check that out. I guess the one that I was looking at is called the EGI Relay. I will get all of this straight someday.

Thanks again,

Jerry

imo they have it worded poorly

teknics 08-04-2007 01:02 PM

did you pull the line off before the filter to see if your filter is clogged? Also might want to check the sock filter on the pump itself.

Unless you know the problem is a lack of voltage to the pump itself, in which case you seem to be on the rite track.

I do have to change the fuel filter, but I am not getting any voltage back to the fuel pump. I was checking the EGI relay where the book (Haynes Manual) said to leave the power going in (round connection) and that there should be continuity over pins 1 and 2, 3 and 4 (square connector)...but I am not getting any continuity over them. I have used a test light and an multi-meter on the testing. I didn't know about the circuit opening relay under the dash...I will have to look for that one too.

Thanks,

Jerry

the wonderful world of fc electrical gremlins oh how I don't miss it LOL

Good luck

circuit works like this.... sorta, i dont think these are in the right order

battery -> main relay -> fuse (not sure which) -> afm -> cuiruit opening relay -> fuel pump

ecu switches the main relay when it sees rpm.

j9 raises a good point, it may be a faulty AFM there's a circuit that sends power to the pump in it.

Seen that happen a few times.

Okay...I am still learning some of this stuff, I checked to see if the pump was working but never actually tried it while it was still hooked up in the tank. When the engine is turned over there is fuel pumping from the line...when I turn the key just to the on position I do not hear the pump prime though...and I should hear this, correct? I tried it from the line that comes from the fuel filter and from the fuel pump and got a real nice stream of gasoline pumping out when it is being turned over, but I don't get anything when the key is just turned to the on position. What am I missing here, can anybody tell me? I hope I don't sound like a complete idiot on this.

hen its just in the on position it should run for a few seconds

it only turns on the pump when the engine is turning, it doesnt run for 2 seconds when you turn the key on.

Oh, okay...I guess the next thing is to change the fuel filter, the oil and go through the de-flooding process and see if I can get it running. I guess I will have to try the pull/push starting thing with it then. Thanks for the help; I really appreciate it. I will let you know how it goes. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif

Quick update on the 7. I changed the oil, fuel filter, and did the procedure to de-flood it and tried to start it with no luck. I sprayed a little starting fluid into the intake and turned it over and it started but died as soon as the starting fluid ran out. I pulled off the upper rail and took out an injector and it was wet with gasoline at the top but not at the bottom. There was also what looked like rust sitting in the screened filter inside...so, I think I am going to need injectors. But I will ask this question anyway...is there any way to clean them or are they just finished? I see that they have injectors at Jegs...can I get them from them or should I try to stay with Mazda or parts from regular parts stores? I appreciate the help that you all have given me already...this is a pretty good site.

Thanks,

Jerry

Ehh, I say shoot 'em with brake cleaner, but wait for a second opinion on that. I don't know anything until PROVEN knowledgeable.

red86rx7gxl 08-22-2007 05:23 PM

Thanks for the input KA, I have a friend whose husband works in a semi-truck garage. I asked her to ask him if they clean injectors there and what it would cost to do it.

Thanks,

Jerry

Well, the cleaning idea didn't come through. I checked the resistance on the injectors and got 2.7 - 3.1 on all of them. The manual says they should be 12 - 16...does that mean that these injectors are bad or that they are going bad? I do appreciate all of the help I have received so far from you guys...hopefully it will be drivable real soon. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif

Sounds like you may have low impedance injectors. These cars came with low imp injectors mid way thru 88 Outhers had high imp (12-14ohm). If you have a ballest resistor on the passenger side strut tower, under the air box your low imp. and 2 ohms is about right.

j9fd3s is right, a saftey feature built into these cars prevents the fule from pumping when the AFM detect's no air flow. So if you hit a teli pole and the engine dies along with you, atleast your not creamated in the car.

There is a site that gives a "how too" On checking weather or not the ecu is sending voltage to the injectors. If all else fails check the ecu.

Dose someone have the link???

theres a couple of places that clean injectors, marren, RC

also you should apply power and ground to em, and make sure they click, if they dont its bad
