I was getting down and dirty tracking down my battery cables to be replaced, when I notice this hole in the bottom of my tranny. I could poke my finger in, and feel gears. It's a hole that looks like should have something in it, the casing's not busted. There's a flat bottom section, just rearward of the starter, that's where the hole is. It's maybe an inch in diameter. What I don't understand is, the hole was not threaded for something to screw in. Do these things have freeze-plug-type-things in them? WTF????
Hopefully there's no irreversible damage, it shifted find last time I drove, and there's not a puddle under the car where it currently is. |
need pics :P

hhmmm, we'll see what I can do tonight. I looked all through the only service manual, and couldn't find anything. I'm guessing it's something simple. If anyone has a pic of the bottom of their tranny, that might help.

ok, n/m. I just called the dealership, and the said that it's for excess oil to drain out, since the clutch there is supposed to stay dry. I'm surprised I didn't notice that before. Neat!

your not seeing gears, your seeing the flywheel

I think your tranny might be different underneath (n/a vs. TII). This plate is about where my hole is:
|
yes baldy, the NA tranny that our cars have is TOTALLY different. That plate is for changing the gearbox gut when jim blow his gearbox up lol jk
|

Yes, the NA tranny and t2 tranny very quite a bit. Is it all the way on the bottom, meaning there is no fluid? Is it threaded?

J9 is right on.
http://pengaru.com/~swivel/cars/rx-7...w_IMG_1473.JPG You can sortof see a black raised disc just to the left of the bore for the long trans <-> engine bolt that the starter obscures when you install it, thats the top side of the plug. The drain plug the dealership is referring to (weeper hole) is behind it just a bit to the left, you can see the casting contours how they lead to the hole so oil can drip out. Thats where you'll see oil dripping from when your front trans seal goes. it's no big deal to have the plug gone, just might let some excessive moisture and dirt get up in there... |
If it's the one I am thinking of in the bellhousing you wouldn't feel gears, you would feel the ring gear, but not multiple gears, this is supposed to have a rubber plug in it to keep the dirt and **** out.
|
aahhhh, very good. I'll see to getting that plug.
