I was getting down and dirty tracking down my battery cables to be replaced, when I notice this hole in the bottom of my tranny. I could poke my finger in, and feel gears. It's a hole that looks like should have something in it, the casing's not busted. There's a flat bottom section, just rearward of the starter, that's where the hole is. It's maybe an inch in diameter. What I don't understand is, the hole was not threaded for something to screw in. Do these things have freeze-plug-type-things in them? WTF????

Hopefully there's no irreversible damage, it shifted find last time I drove, and there's not a puddle under the car where it currently is.

hhmmm, we'll see what I can do tonight. I looked all through the only service manual, and couldn't find anything. I'm guessing it's something simple. If anyone has a pic of the bottom of their tranny, that might help.

Is this a general rubber plug that I can get anywhere, and just shove it it? Or is this a "certified to rape your wallet mazda rx-7 specific" rubber plug? I'm guessing there will be 2 washers and a bolt involved?

you know me, I gotsta have the details

its just a rubber plug, i think any 84+ rwd 4cyl mazda uses it. it doesnt hurt anything if you leave it out

So it's ok to leave it out? Like I said, I could see gears in there, so it wouldn't hurt anything to leave that exposed to humidity and what-not? Should any kind of oil/lube reside in there, or is this space separate from the lube part of the transmission?

Baldy 01-12-2004 11:45 AM

ok, n/m. I just called the dealership, and the said that it's for excess oil to drain out, since the clutch there is supposed to stay dry. I'm surprised I didn't notice that before. Neat!

your not seeing gears, your seeing the flywheel
