I just replaced my clutch and I am getting some strange chatter as I am about to fully release the clutch pedal in neutral. (I have not driven the car yet, so I have no clue how it is in gear)

In my mind - Two possibilities:

1) The Flywheel is not seated all the way. I used my craftsman 30 gal, 6.8 scfm at 90 psi, and a 1/2 Chicago Pheumatic 550 ft/lbs impact gun to tighten the big flywheel bolt. However, after the sucker stopped moving anymore, there were still about 2 threads exposed on the nut. Is this flywheel not on all the way?

2) I got all new clutch hydraulics, and the slave clutch cylinder may not be bled fully yet. Can an poorly bled system cause clutch chatter?

Other relevant info: I have a 91 n/a, and just did a TII drive train swap. Used an S5 TII flywheel, RB S/s clutch and PP, and an S4 TII tranny. All the plumbing is new, and the throwout bearing is new as well.

What is the chatter I'm hearing? And how should I fix it?

Thanks,

-a

the flywheel should slip right into place. I made the same mistake but i torque it down and it was resting on the key wrong. So when i torqued her down i fucked up the key and the nut has zero threads showing,

Once u get the flywheel on it should fall into place like butter.

Here is a pic of it on my old engine, only a few threads in. I also used a impact and I kept at it for a few minute. If you have the instructions for the impact, it migh tell you if you hold it for so and so seconds, it should torque to a specific amount. Always use some locktite too on the treads.

Yes..good pic Turborotor. In you pic you can see a bit of the shaft exposed because the nut is on really well. In my case. I can see two rows of thread on the inside of the nut - as if it not on the shaft all the way.

Things I might have not mentioned above. All components are new, except the S5 Tii flywheel - which was resurfaced at a machine shop, and degreased prior to use.

I dont see how that could happen. I put the flywheel on by hand...lining it up with the key, only after it was on partially...I tighened the nut by hand.

smack the flywheel with your hand after u line it up with the key. the flywheel should sink into it's tapered fit.

Just out of curiosity...what do I do if the key is destroyed?
