So my car has been in the shop the past few days (getting a check up, spent $800 on lost of repairs and labor , mainly that of a fuel-oil mixture pump, duel pully system, and to fix my power driver window that wouldn't go up all the way) and i've been driving my mom's (my old) '86 NA.



so the throttle kept on sticking when pushed in all the way to shift down (auto tranny). i had a free sunday after church and decided to take off the throttle to see what was wrong, a bigger task than i expected. so i took off the intake hose, took off the fuel rail and injectors, undid some small hoses, undid some bigger hoses and the clamps, and got it off. i messed with it, and realized that it was the metal link that connects the throttle to teh tranny for downshifts that was sticking.



so i put everything back together, and started it up. i bent the metal link and it didn't catch any more, one problem solved. it started fine, and drove it around cold, and it worked. so we went running around the next day, and suddenly while smoke started pouring out of the engine and it was overheating. we pulled over and i realized i forgot a clamp and due to the pressure in the cooling system, steam was spewing out. :redface: so it finished, i put the clamp back on, and added fluids. it was still hot, still overheating. we waited, i added water to the radiator when cool, squeezed out the air in the tubes, and topped it off. we drove it today for 30 miles with AC, no overheating. although it was like 50 deg outside. even so, problem solved for now.



a first for me, major car work. my work with the A&M chapter of SAE has proved useful, i have learned some things and am not afraid to do my own work on my car . up next, a complete engine rebuild, lol. seriously though, its about time i do my own work, espicially after spending $400 on labor. $60 to fix my window? heck, i could do that, i just needed the part! same for the dual pully!

There is nothing more satisfying then fixing your car the right way. It makes you feel like you know the car better.

so true, i feel at one with the car, and it wasn't really that hard, except for the lack of a 10mm socket which the tool kit was missing. my confidence has grown mucho.



next on the list: new steering wheel, new dual guage pod and temp guage, and some minor exterior upgrades. when i have the money, i will change out the shock and springs, i need some new ones over original stock. that will have to wait till summer and after i trim down my hugh credit card debt, a result of my RX-7.



i'm so ready to get out of college, 1 1/2 more years, then it's fun times. keep the RX-7, buy a super tool kit, and spend the money that i would be on an expensive sports car on my TII :bigok:

working on your own cars is the only way to really get to know your vehicles, it makes driving them so much more satisfying.



no 10mm socket? damn, I think 90% of the hex bolts/nuts are 10 & 12 mm on these cars... get that socket!

yeah, he had the 12, which came in handy, just no 10. had a 10mm wrench, which helped, but those places are sooo tight, my fingers got beat up.
