Well I have my tranny out trying to diagnose a knocking in the clutch. It only happens at idle, or up to 1/4 throttle in gear and it will go away if I press the clutch in about 1/4 of the way. It also sometimes knocks rather deeply on startup.

I just pulled the tranny, and found theres about 1/2cm of space between where the Throwout bearing and clutch fork meet. So basically in the C shaped area of the TO bearing, it looks like it needs to be bent inwards perhaps.

This is all I can find that could make a knock like this. Any suggestions?

TIA,

Geoff

How's the bearing itself? You don't want those parts too tght or else the bearing will bind up on the clutch fork. The little "arms" should be perpendicular to the bearing surface. That's how they usually look new.

Twin89Stangs 09-06-2002 02:20 PM

my throwout bearing on my GT has been noisy for a while too... squeakes until I push the pedal about 1/4 way in then stops or stops when I get into the throttle while driving... been like that for 16,xxx miles... no longer worry about it. Though it is a bit embarassing when around hot ass girls.. lol I usually hold the clutch in at that time! lol

phinsup 09-06-2002 02:22 PM

Can you feel it in the clutch pedal or the gearshift or both?

Geoffman72 09-06-2002 02:28 PM

13bace - thanks, it is perpendicular to the fork surface, I just needed to make sure thats how its supposed to be

I've checked the pilot bearing. To the best of my knowledge, its fine. The seal looks semi crushed, but im not sure that would make too much of a difference.

I forgot to mention, the other day I wound it up high, and above 5,500 it started making the rattling at a fast rate, almost a buzzing. Then something hung because the engine bucked.

Phinsup - You can feel it in the clutch pedal and not in the shifter

I installed an RB 12lb flywheel and ACT clutch back in May, and its been fine until about mid July when the noise started.

The flywheel and clutch seem tight. I dont think its coming from the tranny itself. im completely stuck on this

phinsup 09-06-2002 02:32 PM

My guess is pilot bearing, throwout bearing or the bearing on the output shaft of the tranny. Usually when you put the clutch in and the noise goes away it's pilot bearing.

Geoffman72 09-06-2002 02:34 PM

hmm...what about right when starting, it will knock fairly badly right at the point it fires up?

phinsup 09-06-2002 02:35 PM

Knock from the tranny? Or more likely the bell housing? Strange that you can't feel it in the gear shift.

Geoffman72 09-06-2002 02:40 PM

Forgot to specify that. Its definitely coming from the bellhousing. I had it running and took the inspection plate off, and it seemed to be coming from the clutch area.

So the question is, what could cause a knock like that, and also makes something catch when revved high enough, to make the engine buck.

I thought it might have even been the stsrter teeth not disengaging all the way, and barely hitting the flywheel, or the flywheel coming loose and hitting the edge of something. I just want to know what it is! :(

Twin89Stangs 09-06-2002 02:44 PM

Well on mine.... I know it is the throwout bearing... but then again I cant feel anything.. nice and smooth...

phinsup 09-06-2002 02:46 PM

Any damage to the Ring Gear or anything. If your starter wasn't fully disengaging and cause the engine to buck you'd see some serious damage to the starter or the ring gear.

Geoffman72 09-06-2002 02:46 PM

Mine is smooth too. Unless its knocking.

I'm not sure what would be worse in front of girls. The knocking or the squeaking? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

Geoffman72 09-06-2002 02:48 PM

Nope, I knew that. Ring gear is perfect, sans some missing black paint from contacting the starter teeth when they should be

phinsup 09-06-2002 02:51 PM

Well for ****. Moving parts in the bell housing are the eccentric shaft, flywheel, counterweight, clutch, throwout bearing and input shaft on the tranny.

That statement is no help... just thinking outloud.

Geoffman72 09-06-2002 02:55 PM

It usually helps that way.

I dont think its possible to put the counterweight on too far to where it hits parts of the rear housing.

I'm going to go back out and check the tightness of the clutch bolts and maybe pull the whole assembly off https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

phinsup 09-06-2002 02:58 PM

Yea pull it off, it would seem that with that kind of symptom something would have obvious damage. No you can't put the counterweight on to where it would hit anything unless you just plain had a defective counter weight or something.

Trust me I understand your tranny woes... will be pulling an RX-7 tranny for the 3rd time in less than a month. If it ain't one car it's the other!

Geoffman72 09-06-2002 03:31 PM

the third time?! :o If that happens to me, teh arson is inevitable https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

Anyways, I did just remember, when I installed all this, RB claimed 14ft/lbs for the pressure plate bolts, is this true?

phinsup 09-06-2002 03:34 PM

Yea that sounds right, I just put them on gootentight with my calibrated impact wrench.

Well my deal was, bought the 88, clutch was bad, swapped the clutch, but the throwout bearing was missing when I pulled, which I think in turn buggered the tranny. So now I need to replace the tranny. The tranny in the 84, which I will be tossing back in Saturday was bad when I bought the car over 30,000 miles ago LOL

vosko 09-06-2002 03:36 PM

my TII tranny works fine. it grinds when you try and do super fast shifts otherwise its perfect......

phinsup 09-06-2002 03:40 PM

Yea well I would rather creep around on my tranny then your motor https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png ass!

phinsup 09-06-2002 03:42 PM

Of course I drive up 2 very large hills to get to my house.. that is why the call it a Plateau... so i am just waiting for the day when the ******* tranny fly's apart. Oh yea when i pulled the tranny from the 88, there was a huge hole in the bell housing, did not look stock and is not in any other rx-7 tranny I have had out... guess that should have been a clue.

**** I think I have a tranny swap down to 3 hours, that includes 6 beers and 3 piss breaks to get rid of the beer.

Well it appeared that they blew the clutch so bad the put a hole in the bell housing. Oh well, all will be well soon. I will have a replacement tranny and I will be a happy idiot.

atleast its easy to find TII trannies :bigok:

phinsup 09-06-2002 03:56 PM

Yea so find me one! and make it cheap, I will make it worth your while.

Geoffman72 09-06-2002 07:02 PM

Problem solved. It was the flywheel nut backing off :o

The reason it seemed sturdy before was because the tranny input shaft was holding the clutch and flywheel in place.

Now that I know whats wrong, I should have her running nicely tomorrow evening! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

PS - I will also take pics of the garbage bag full of carbon I got out of 13baces exhaust I bought from him https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif
