I spent just about my entire Memorial Day swapping my passenger side door on my 1990 GTu. I purchased two doors off of an S4 that was painted the same color as my cay for $2. This included tinted windows, regulators, gaskets, hinges, etc. Pretty damn good deal considering the doors are in great condition.

Well, my thinking was that this should only take about two hours to complete. Shouldn't be that difficult, just unbolting two hinges and bolting a new door on. Then swapping over all the old hardware. What I didn't relize is that ALL of the hardware is different. So I had to keep going back and swapping items out that I thought I could keep with no problems, for example, the actual latch assembly had to be swapped because the current one is integrated into the factory alarm and the old one is not. The door handle was a bitch to remove, and getting the door all nice and lined up was a pain.

Finally got all the mechanics straightened out and working. I was about to put the door panel back on and reconnect my speaker when I remembered I forgot to reconnect the wiring harness under the dash. To my dismay, it is different. ARRRGGG!!!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.png

So now I have to go back, remove the stupid door again and swap the harnesses. Unless someone has a better idea. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif

Yeah that's how my step dad and a hammer ruined a 350 turob tranny by trying to beat the front main seal into the tranny, You know a bottle of jin and cran berry juice will tell on you real fast when your working on cars.

I managed to pull the harness through without removing the door, just the hinge pin. It was a pain in the a$$, but not too bad. Removal of the old harness was simple with my nice sharp set of wire cutters. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

What is the best way to remove old pin striping and adhesive from the door? It's on there pretty good. I don't want to scratch it up trying to get it off.

3m makes a spray for that. Maybe you can find something like that at your local auto supply..

Use a hair dryer to soften the pinstripe material and slowly lift it with a thin, plastic putty knife.

Rob x-7 05-27-2003 07:23 PM

before you remove the pinstripping make sure the door wasnt repainted

to a hardline with the pinstripping. Thats a good used car lot trick, or for someone who didnt feel like paying to get a whole door painted, so when

they paint it they hardline it and slap some $3 pinstripping down the side of the car. You can feel for a line of paint.

If its all good use the hair dryer like someone said, then use some

3M general purpose adhesive cleaner.
