Um, get under the car and look for holes? If the car smokes a little on startup, as many cars do in the winter months, you may be able to tell where its coming from by peering under the car right after you start it up.

Fixing it would involve procuring a new part for the one that is holey, unbolting the old one, and bolting in the new one. If you are not familiar with the underside of your car and have never bloodied a knuckle, this would be a good time to start. This sort of work is a lot more fun with a friend and a six-pack. In a pinch, the six-pack can be your friend.

NOTE: The only real way to go wrong here is to buy a cheapie part that the store says will fit, but really doesn't. Buy from a reputable store that knows what an RX-7 is.

NOTE #2: I can't count the times that I've taken on a rusty exhaust system, tried to replace just one part of it, and ended up taking all day and cussing a lot. In the end I say I'll never do another exhaust job. I'll take it to a shop. But still I find myself doing exhaust work. I think I may have a problem.

you will need to learn to weld... find the hole by jacking up the entire car and starting it when its off the ground... you'll be able to feel the exhaust coming out of the pipe where the hole is.

It could also be a gasket leaking...

not to thread jack, but I think I may have the same problem, with the same car.

when applying the throttle, i hear a sound like exhaust being squeezed through a small opening with paper in the way, so it's kinda raspy and farty sounding, like doing raspberries into a tin can.

it happens before I build boost, so I'm pretty sure it's not the turbo.

does this sound like an exhaust leak?

where i would start is start the car up whilst on jack stands and then feel around all the joints. then i would start looking for cracks in the pipe

My mani was cracked into the gasket area and had blown out a large chunk of the gasket. Good time for the s5 upgrade.

To find it if you suspect the turbo area, stick a piece of vacuum hose in your ear and then probe around down around the suspected area with the other end. Works very well.

Cheers
