pengaru 07-01-2003 04:03 PM

dry ice makes neat work of removing it, makes it all brittle.

FrestyleFC3S 07-01-2003 04:07 PM

yea...im gonna do that tomorrow...but there was just that one deposit that was all ******* gross with melted tar

FrestyleFC3S 07-01-2003 04:11 PM

also - why the **** would it have melted?

Nemesis 07-01-2003 04:27 PM

Well when you hit the NOS, you floor panel blew off, all the extra heat from the turbo melted it...

Banzai is probably right... You probably have cats too right?

FrestyleFC3S 07-01-2003 04:50 PM

yea i have cats

pengaru 07-01-2003 05:09 PM

it gets soft pretty easy, just sitting in the sun can make it gooey if you take out the carpet and park it outside.

some of my tar was softer than others, not sure why the inconsistency, espeically when the car had been parked in a garage for almost a year.

Cheers! 07-01-2003 07:42 PM

leave the tar, it will prevent rust from forming.

Unless u remove it and put POR-15. have fun...

you should see under my seats, tar doesnt help for ****.

you should take the tar off and definitely por15, it will be better than just the tar.

FrestyleFC3S 07-02-2003 12:34 AM

k so educate me...how does the tar prevent rust....and what is por15

drifter 07-02-2003 01:17 AM

The tar prevents air and moisture getting to the metal, therefore preventing rust.

POR15 is a rust resistant paint.

Best way to get tar off is with a heat gun and scraper. Else methylated spirits also works. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/unsure.png

FrestyleFC3S 07-02-2003 01:24 AM

so i should reconsider taking the tar off?

drifter 07-02-2003 01:51 AM

If your up to scraping and then painting....

I mean, its there for a reason. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

I know of a few people who have scraped all the tar off their floors and painted them. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/unsure.png

FrestyleFC3S 07-02-2003 01:57 AM

i was thinkin more of the dry ice and banging it off way

FrestyleFC3S 07-02-2003 01:59 AM

does the paint come in black? ... i would just paint a thin layer of black on it then to make it look nice, then lay the carpet over

banzaitoyota 07-02-2003 07:11 AM

Gus: I have used POR-15 before on the 914-6 projects. IT SUCKS!!!!!!

Zero-Rust is a better product

hrm, my friend used por15 on his t2's engine bay, and the results were pretty nice. Did the 914-6 guy elaborate on what he disliked about por15?

banzaitoyota 07-02-2003 12:42 PM

The 914-6 guy was ME!

We had a decent 914-6 that was the PCA beater, had some minor rust on the scraped areas of the floor pan. We stripped off all the existing undercoating and prepped it. Less than one month after painting with POR-15, the paint was coming off in sheets. After talking with the Tech-line at POR-15 we were told we had over-prepped the surface!!!. All we did was scotch-brite to clean shiney metal with a lacquar-thinner wipe-down.

damn, that sucks.

banzaitoyota 07-02-2003 01:37 PM

Which is why I use Zero-Rust. Cheaper, easier to clean up and thin, has better sticking charecteristics

i'll have to ask my friend with the por15 on his engine bay how it has been holding up, I know when he prepped he sanded it down to bare metal and used some kind of prep coat that came with the por15 system before painting the finish, made it all brownish colored, nickel or something? you probably know what i'm talking about.
