I need help!!! when I turn the ignition switch on my 1985 rx7 off the engine continues to run. Could someone please tell what to do to fix the problem?

be a bit more specific.. like .. does the car stay on indefinately? or on for a while after you shut it off? is it hard to start afterwards? what have you checked? this may help people give you a better reply..

how do you shut it off right now?

75 Repu 06-19-2005 05:28 PM

BillFrosby 06-19-2005 05:28 PM

hold the brake and let off the clutch with it in gear

BillFrosby 06-19-2005 05:29 PM

Maybe check the wiring at the back of the alternator...I had this happen to a friends 87 Turbo....two wires at the back of the alternator were touching each other causing the ignition to not shut off. Just unplug it and try it...he drove his around for weeks without it pluged in.

BillFrosby 06-19-2005 05:41 PM

just unpluged the alternator and used the key to cut it off so it worked https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png thanks for the help

75 Repu 06-19-2005 05:44 PM

why is this in the engine building section?

anyway, do you have any aftermarket fans wired or anything that is electric wired into the car that didn't come from the factory?

I've seen carb'd cars "run on" like this....tho what i'm talking about istn' an ignition problem. it looks like your problem was solved, but i'm going to post this for reference purposes.

run on is when you have a carb'd car and it does not shut up after the ignition is switched off. I had a few toyota's that did this. what happens is that sometimes the spark plugs will retain enough heat energy that if you are using a low octane gas, it will ignite from the heat when it is compressed, not needing an actual spark from the ignition system. I forget what you have to do to solve this problem, and i certainly dont' know if a rotary would do this or how to fix it if a rotary did do it, but the solution is to use a higher octane gasoline.
