Okay on my way to work yesterday I smelled that nasty burning electrical smell about that time the car died and I saw smoke billowing out from under the hood. I open it my alternator was black and there was flame right in the center of the engine looked loike it was on top of the lower intake . I know I have to now replace all of my vacuum lines and alternator and probably some elctrical wiring to. any Ideas why this would happen. please help. me

What year car?
It could be the famous pulsation damperner problem. C |
It is an 86 GXL
So I should only have to replace what is fried and the pulsation damper and I will hopefully be okay.? |
leaky gas or oil could have collected on the lower intake and ignited from the heat of the engine. If you have insurance you can file a claim and they should take care of it. Make sure to tell them you saw flames and not just smoke. I had a small engine fire in my Jeep a couple of months after I bought it, and the insurance company took car of it with no problem. This was good because if took the shop 2 weeks to repair it and cost over 2000! Actually a couple years after that I had an electrical fire in the Jeep caused from a grounding wire in my dash. It melted the **** out of my harness, BUT the insurance company didn't want to pay for it because I never saw flames, so it wasn't considered a real fire. They eventually reimburse me, but not for the full amount that it actually cost. Luckily a friend of the family did all the work and did not charge me any extra. This was on his spare time however so I didn't have a vehicle for like 6 weeks. The insurance paid like 960, which was a lowball estimate they rounded up. It really should have been twice as much with all the labor.

I would replace the fuel rail with an 89-91 NA rail. It has integrated pulsation damper that won't leak like the 86-88 part.

The primary rail seems to fit fine. I was able to bolt a S5 TII primary rail to an 86-88 NA intermediate housing. |
cool guys thanks for all the help I will let you know what I find out tomarrow when I clean off all the chared mess. How much of a pain in the ass is it to replace the wire harness with everything still being in the car.?
