so i have this problem, and have had this problem for a while, where when i have a quarter tank of gas or less and make a left turn going faster than 10-20 mph, the engine dies. Then after less than a second, it comes back, full throttle.
it also does this when i accelerate real fast and am low on gas (not empty, or close to empty, just low). it has also done it when i have a full tank, which seems to throw out the theory that the gas sloshes around so much that it runs out of fuel. Any ideas? My theory: something wrong with the fuel pump, but what do i know. Most likely, it will be some gremlin in the wiring that i will spend months looking for and never find. |
pull the pump out of the tank and have a look, its not hard to do

Yeah check the Filter screen on the pick up of the pump. Mine did the same thing and the screen was really dirty. I cleaned it and it worked fine after that.

cool, thanks for the tips, i'll have to try this out

Could it possibly be a clogged fuel filter? (my friend with a mustang 5.0 suggested that, but he drives a ford, so what does he know? lol)

If you need any help with how to get to the fuel pump let me know. |
your fuel gauge may not be accurate...
fuel level maybe lower than indicated.... |
my engine cut off recenlty during a very hard left...but then turned right on again. I remember this happened to my friend in virginia...and he bought a new foam filter from mazda that sits at the bottom of the fuel pump.
I did the same this week and stopped by the dealer to order one. It was $10. should solver your problems https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png |

no, it does the same thing after i have filled up, and even after 20 miles or so off a full tank

By chance, do you have a fuel pump kill switch installed? My 87 t2 has had the same problem. After I installed my switch, the ground started to come loose. Everytime I made a hard turn at low speeds, it would die then would start back after the car would come out of the turn. I cleaned the ground and it was okay again.
|
actually, yeah i do have a kill switch installed, so this might be it. i changed my fuel filter yesterday and cleaned the fuel pump basket with alcohol. the fuel filter was sooo undersized, at least compared to my new one from advance auto (about 1 1/2 " shorter, 1" smaller in diamter), and wasn't even mounted, just dangling. so i changed it and attached it with zip-ties as best as possible.
it idles much better, and i'm going to start it up tomorrow and see if it hesitates like before. i'll push it in a u-turn and see what happens. It its bad, i might have to check the switch theory. either way, the car seems to run a lot better at low rpm's with this new filter. |
