Ok well I am new to rotary motors.

I just bought a new rx7, and it was not starting.

Turns out it was flooded.

Now every time I start it, it blows smoke and will not keep idle.

I am assuming that the apex seal is bad.

I did change the oil the first time I got it running.

I have a friend that told me I can use a engine/cooling sealant

to fix the problem.

I can not find any info on this topic anywhere though.

He said that his friend did it to his 88 and it worked like a charm.

Can anyone shed some light on this topic?

Hopefully you didnt pay too much for the car. What area do you live? there might be some rotorheads nearby to give you a hand.

I only paid one thousand for it, but I am in a hard spot for cash

Get a compression check done or do it yourself. It will let you know where you stand. If it is an apex seal, there is nothing short of a rebuild that can fix it.

I guess I am screwed.

Why, did you do a compression check yet? You can't just ASSUME you have a busted apex seal. That's like saying, "oh, I have a headache, it must be a tumor, let me just give away my worldly possessions and kill myself."

rxjc 07-26-2007 08:46 AM

well I just need more time and money.

what else could be causing my problems then?

It runs really rich.

Smokes every time I start it.

I kill it by taking out the egi comp fuse out and,

not putting it in until I start it.

1988RedT2 07-26-2007 08:50 AM

Does it pull at all? If you've blown an apex seal, the best you could likely do is keep it running badly with no load. If you can accelerate the car, then it's probably not an apex seal. Start with the compression check.

toplessFC3Sman 07-26-2007 10:15 AM

if turning the key to off doesnt kill it, either you have some electrical problems or plugs that are way too hot. If its the first, they may be contributing to running rich too. Usually if an apex seal is gone, trying to kill the engine is not the problem... its keeping it running thats the challenge.

Rotaman99 07-26-2007 11:20 AM

Ya it sounds to me like you are running extremly rich. What color smoke is it?

Can you see anywhere in the engine bay, any new wiring thats been done?

rxjc 07-26-2007 04:27 PM

I have no problem turning the car off.

I just have a problem starting it.

A HUGE blue cloud of smoke every time.

The car runs really rich I can smell it.

The car just gives me problems when it is cold.

It pulls hard when it is warmed up.

I have no clue what to do.

To me that says its not an apex seal. Don't jump to conclusions too quick. You should probably check the compression anyway to see what condition its in. It sounds like it's flooding bad. The injectors are probably pretty leaky. You can get the injectors cleaned professionally for not too much money.

I would start by doing general maintenance. New plugs, change the oil (look in the oil to see if there are any big metal flakes), new fuel filter (even though a clogged filter doesn't seem likely), check and adjust the TPS and the ignition timing, visually check over all the wiring and the vacuum hoses to make sure nothing is weird there. Hmmmm, thats all I can think of off hand. All of that won't cost very much, and even if it doesn't fix it, it sure as hell won't hurt.

Good Luck

Andy

thanks everyone.

I am glad it doesn't sound like low compression.

leaky injectors yes.

no metal flakes in my oil.

just trouble shooting then.

Blown

rxjc 07-27-2007 02:23 PM

well then.

I don't know what to think now.

the car runs great when it is warmed up.

This is the only piece of evidence you've given us. There is no possible way anyone can make a diagnosis based on this alone. So until you provide any additional information (ie, color of smoke, compression test numbers, video of the car running, anything), it might be best for you to ignore what other people say about what your problem is.

If you're this quick to accept what someone says is wrong, you might just want to take it to an actual mechanic.

rxjc 07-28-2007 12:15 AM

alright guys thanks.

I will look into it more physically.
