I had that diff knock problem. the one usually caused when that diff mount goes bye bye. well, i dropped the rear and this is what i found!

if you didn't see it the first time, here's another angle

it seemed as though it wasn't the mount itself. but where the mount bolted to on the subframe. it simply broke off

but... that wasn't all

right side

wish i could say it's the camera. but the right side lateral link is bent.

here's a somewhat farther shot

whats this diff knock?

13b_junkie 01-04-2005 11:14 PM

i was referring to that knocking noice back there when that front diff mount goes. yes, i should've worded it better. but i'm beat. too tired...

just wanted to share some of my findings. now i'm off to find another subframe? er what can i say. i've only had this car if 6 months.

Cheers! 01-05-2005 08:24 AM

that is not uncommon, my friend's 88 TII had the same thing happen. Just weld on a new bracket and make it beefier

Turbonut 01-05-2005 10:00 AM

Keep in mind, it's actually easier to drop the whole rear subframe assembly as one entire unit. Just unblot shocks, calipers, driveshaft, link, stabilizer bar, frame mount bolts and drop the whole unit. Easier to install also, although a little bulky.

While you are at it reinforce where the camber link mounts to the subframe.

13b_junkie 01-05-2005 01:09 PM

cheers: any tips on making that bracket beefier?

revvin: how do you propose i do that?

sorry for the nOob-ishness. but this is the first big thing i'm embarking on with this car. and with the findings, it went from a weekend project to the rest of winter project.

just reinforce it a bit. try to add more metal around the area that you are welding to. Then clean off all the rust and paint it. Rust makes things weak, they are stress risers

i got another subframe sourced out. the next task at hand is to find a place to get it reinforced.

make that part of the bracket thicker and all that's left to do is find slightly longer bolts for the mounts.

Rob x-7 01-05-2005 06:29 PM

how did you manage to do that anyhow?

vosko 01-05-2005 08:20 PM

actually, i was just driving home from work. wasn't pushing it. then i heard a loud ass thump. and that was two months ago. haven't had the time to check it until now.

vosko: i'm lost. i don't know of what you speak of

lol

vosko 01-05-2005 08:54 PM

he sells adjustable custom lateral links that are much stronger..... he was supposed to post on here

13b_junkie 01-05-2005 09:11 PM

oh, lateral links. i forgot i posted about those in here too. i still had that subframe bracket in my head. i'll definitely drop him a line. my friend had an extra set. but i might as well get something stronger. i'm redoing much of the rear while it's apart anyway.

1Revvin7 01-06-2005 10:08 AM

Weld plates of steel to either side of the flimsy stock mounting location for the camber link. You will need an longer hardened bolt and nut, as the stock one is meant for the stock width.

13b_junkie 01-06-2005 08:17 PM

ok. thanks guys. i have a long way and much do to with the new subframe. i'll be redoing pretty much the whole rear while i'm there. this should be a fun project. lol
