i have been having trouble starting, ok when cold, starts immediately if i drive the car then start it again but wont start if i let the car sit for five minutes. some friends of mine have been saying that the cranking sounds slow and that the starter motor could be going bad, anyone have anything to tell me to make sure that i don't just buy the starter and have it be some other problem. and no its not leaking injectors already swapped those out and did the plugs and filters to those are good.

Inspect them too, i've had them look ok, then you wiggle them and notice the inside has pretty much corroded away. My jeep wouldnt start, battery cable looked great reached down and touched the cable to the starter and it was crunchy inside. |
well tommorrow i am going to take it apart and try seeing if it just needs a cleaning

So nothing happens when you try and start it?
|
When you say "won't start", do you mean the starter turns the motor, but it won't start? Or the starter doesn't turn at all?
|
you could always try replacing the starter solenoids

So the engine is turning over but it's not firing correct? Sounds slow I read, that could be a problem test the battery. Any good parts store will be more than happy to check that. Weak starter when hot possible, insulation on the armature or windings giving up. You need three things to get fire in the engine, fuel, air and spark what's missing? Check spark use a phillips screw driver pull a leading wire and place the boot over the shaft and hold the handle. Now move the shaft near a ground and watch for fire. Air is a give me, so do you have fuel or too much. Letting a warm engine sit and it starts after a bit, maybe these injectors leak too. Fuel pressure to high? Hope this helps ya a little. |
I've had the same problem, I just replaced the o2 sensor, thought that was the cause but it isn't. The only other code that shows up is a slight evap system leak. It seems that the engine has to "cool off" before it can be started again, which is a real pain when at the gas station. It seems to run perfectly normal once it starts. It seems like the car is still running rich though, gas mileage is worse than normal. I had to replace the regulator in the alternator as well. The car has 120 000 km on it, any ideas, I don't have the tools to check compression so id like some input before I do anything else.
Side note, when you try to start it, the engine turns over and will fire, but die out, if you start it with your foot in it, it dies out even faster, if the car has been idling for a long time you might not even get it to fire at first, doesn't matter how many times you try to turn it over, it slowly fires more and more until eventually it starts, usually if it sits for longer than 20 minutes it will start fairly easy. |
