I just picked up another FC, 89 Turbo II, and I am debating wether or not to pull the AC and PS when I put it together in a week or so.

I have never driven a FC with a manual rack or depowered powered rack, but I don't own a car with PS ether. Same way with AC, Its been a few years since I have owned a car with A/C.

So what does everyone think? I would love to keep the engine bay empty and clean, the weight savings is a plus also.

nightwolf_4_98 12-22-2004 05:27 AM

if your already used to manual steering, then there isnt much of a point keepin the PS, and i've never really seen the point of A/C to begin with, if it gets to warm, that's what a window is for https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/happy.png

ColinRX7 12-22-2004 06:03 AM

I ditched them both in one of mine. I was hesitant too.

I did it because I couldn't have fit the new intake and stuff with the pump and compressor on that side of the engine bay.

It's not such a big difference to be honest.

ReactionEffect 12-22-2004 06:25 AM

So what did you guys do for the rack? On my Miata I just looped the two lines together. Plug them off, loop the lines, or hunt down a manual rack?

Cheers! 12-22-2004 07:28 AM

keep the rack. the 89+ TIIs have the best power steering out of all the FCs. It is electronically controlled where as the other 89 NA cars are strictly speed sensing.

Rob x-7 12-22-2004 09:26 AM

I dont know where all these people live that say ditch the A/C, but I would leave it

lets see your open window cool you off when your sitting in traffic and its 90 degrees out, never mind if it gets humid where you are.

as far as the P/S goes, maybe get a manual rack instead of just plugging the lines.

Keep resale in mind as well, cars that have not been butchered sell much faster.

nightwolf_4_98 12-22-2004 09:36 AM

unless your a pansy 90 degree's is nothing, in my first 510 i drove in 100+ degree weather, and the heater was stuck in the on position, now that is something that needs more then open windows https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/happy.png

Rob x-7 12-22-2004 09:48 AM

you can be a man all you want, let me see you go to dinner or wedding or something with a date in your non-ac car when its 100 degrees outside and your sweating like a pig.

and if your heater was stuck open, why not fix it or at the very least loop the coolant lines going to the heater core?

Haha. I'm totally with Rob on this one. Try living here in Richmond, VA or points further south without A/C. Forget it. You will be wet and stinky and you will not have any friends. When it's 90-plus and the humidity is up, you will be hatin' life. No way I'd ever have a DD without A/C.

That being said, I pulled the A/C on my 7 right away, since it didn't work anyway, and it's basically a race car. More room, less weight = win, win.

So, in closing, it all depends how much you'll be driving this car in the summer.

because at that time i wasnt as mechanicly inclined as i am now, and i have done exactly that and thankfully i dont sweat easily so it works out ^_^ personaly i dont pay attention to the weather, hot or cold, unless there's ice on the ground or my arms are roasting because of the sun..

and i'll be liveing about an hour away from richmond quite soon actuly so i will be able to try that https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/tongue.png

with an 89T2 the resale/value of the car is al ot higher than most other FCs with the convertible being the exception. Once you start yanking all the stuff real people don't want to buy them and they are worth **** all. S5TIIs are rarer then FDs

boost_creep 12-22-2004 10:31 AM

I know there are places hotter than south fla. but I sweat alot and hate when there is no A/C in my car, I guess some guys love having that big wet sweat ring marks under their arms.................. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

I am having mine put back in as it never worked before.............just to avoid smelling like a barn full of cows................ https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png

OH and my car came with manual steering........and I have been fine with that.

baller520 12-22-2004 12:08 PM

I smell like an oil refinery after driving my car anyways, so any sweat smell is not noticeable. I haven't had a/c for over 2 years, I've gone on many many dates in that time. I've never gotten a complaint. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683473.gif

In my FD:

I removed PS and AC. For the PS i put bolts in the holes and here is why. With a steering rack full of fluid and a loop, you are pushing all that fluid around when you turn. So, i undid the lines, and turned the wheels lock to lock once with a catchpan under the rack. This drains some of the fluid out of the rack. If you dont drain some of it and bolt, the rack will be nearly impossible to turn. The fluid that is left in the rack lubricates it.

Now the FD has 255 potenzas up front, and i honestly love the feel of no PS. Its not really tough at all when in the parking lots.

My AC did not work, and I dont D/D the car, So no remorse there.

After working on FD's for a while, I would be happier to buy a car without ac and PS, because it makes working on the car easier and more importantly faster.

ReactionEffect 12-22-2004 02:05 PM

Yeah, FB has AC but doesn't work I have debated rebuilting the 12 and fixing the A/C, summers are bad here in Arkansas, but I usually work nights so I sleep through the day.

I guess I will still think on it.

That's a good point, take it into consideration.

Alot of people remove stuff they don't think they "need", then after a while without it they suddenly hate the car because it has less luxury and more hassle.

Depends on your application for the car, do what works for you.

Rob x-7 12-23-2004 07:25 AM

if its a weekend only spare car thats going to have 350-400hp or you will autocross or roadrace it only, then the decision is simple

if its a DD then the answer is once again simple.

ReactionEffect 12-23-2004 12:36 PM

It might be my daily driver for a couple of months, but I plan to buy another DD by the start of summer.

defprun 12-24-2004 09:24 AM

my fb didnt even have a radio

stop being a pansy!

ReactionEffect 12-24-2004 10:42 AM

Right now I am leaning on keeping it. I will find the weight savings else where on the car. I haven't weighed the car, but I am hoping that I am going to right around 2800 when complete, anything below that is even better.

Seppuku 12-24-2004 11:17 AM

im getting rid of my ps but leaving the ac. The car isnt bad without the ps so no point but without the ac in the summer it could get bad and here it likes to rain and it will still be warm, so windows up and na ac in the rain isnt good.

Goodfellafd3s 12-24-2004 10:33 PM

I have been without it in my FD for about 2 years. Makes the motor so much easier to pull, and also makes working on the car (spark plugs etc) much much easier. Get rid of all of it......if your chica wants a/c, tell her to go date Hugh Grant https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

Rob x-7 12-25-2004 09:23 AM

neither really get in the way of changing the plugs on a FC, its not like the FD.

plus FC motors dont need to be removed as often as FD motors, lol

Dramon_Killer 12-25-2004 11:13 PM

Its a sort of crime to pull a working a/c...

Btw, what kind of reaction are you? A frestyle one?

vosko 12-26-2004 11:36 AM

keep the PS lose the AC!!!

PS is needed....

Needed for what? ive been drifting in my vert already and i still have the pump just no belt since the lines are cracked. I dont see what its needed for.

nightwolf_4_98 12-26-2004 02:25 PM

PS isnt needed if your upper body is strong enough to turn the wheel, and it doesnt take that much effot, seriously.. maybe from a stop its sort of a bitch, but eh, it's liveable
