I have been reading the posts here for some time but I just now picked up my first seven. It is a 1986 GXL N/A and it needs some love. I got it at a junk yard but it is in suprisingly good shape. My father and I actually got it started the very night we brought it home... However, it did not stay running for too long cause of crappy gasoline.
I already have plans for a moderate port job, not a bridge port or anything too funky. I want to add an IC, turbo, and water injection later on down the road. I haven't yet looked at the exhaust situation yet. It looks like Monza pipes but I don't know if it has the cats or not. So just a few questions for the resident experts and the rotor headed masses: Can I put a TII turbo and intercooler from say an 88' on the 86' GXL? I don't think I have seen the 86' with a factory turbo, granted I have not looked real hard either. Or would I be better off looking for an after market turbo and IC if I am only looking for 7-15 PSI? What do I have to do to loose that silly smog pump??? We don't have exhaust gas testing where I live... What are some other recomended mods for a daily driver??? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683473.gif |
adding a turbo is a huge ordeal, you'd be better off swiping the motor and drivetrain from a TII, or buying a TII (at least that's what I read).
Take the smog pump off, remove your catalytic converters*, and add a dual belt pulley onto your alternator, to keep the correct tension on your water pump. Simple stuff, doesn't take much time or money. *Get an exhaust shop to weld a pipe in place of the cats, or go aftermarket exhaust. |
