here are some pics of a few hoods i have been working on....one is more panspeedish...i decided to move the vent about 8 inches foward and looks a hell of alot better, the customer wanted it that way....and then i have the other done and ready to go to the shop (its dirty as well). The second one is off of my old mold.

that last one was me sanding where i added in the scoop to my clean NA copy (last mold had some issues)

here is one of the same hood that needs some cleaning on the underside.....needs trimming where the excess mat laid....no biggie but it isnt pretty yet.....

you guys can tell how well organized I am and what a professional environment i am working in. Hell i could sleep in there. Here is the under of that hood.....it looks okay and needs to be washed but it makes it way too heavy to have the whole underside....but customer prefers look over weight....

I been waiting for a while now...what's up?

dltreezan 11-24-2003 05:55 PM

check ur PMs

Rob x-7 11-24-2003 08:40 PM

nice, are you applying anything of what I told you to the process

now?

I think I see a can of Turtle Wax under there, thats not your mold

release is it?

by the way, in this pic, that line on the hood in the right of the pic, thats not

a line from the matting is it?

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/upl...1069479973.jpg

dltreezan 11-24-2003 09:41 PM

Turtle wax??? Yes its there and NOOO i dont use it for my release wax and as far as a line in the matting yes yes yes!! You caught me but it makes no difference as the whole thing is primered and sanded above so it doesnt show thru, but yes if it were just gelcoat and glass it would be a problem and therefore i wouldnt have allowed it to happen. And as far as your process and techniques i have been working on this since before we spoke and next hood i will be following your advice to the best i see fit.

dltreezan 11-24-2003 09:47 PM

btw thats sheets of coremat not chopped mat....big difference.....

Rob x-7 11-25-2003 06:54 PM

didnt we clear up the coremat thing? I hope your just using it up

and not going to use it in the future?

ALWAYS tear your matt, even if you block the gelcoat down

prime, block it again, paint it and wet sand and polish it,

give it some time in the sun and that line will show thru, I gurantee it.

I have seen repairs where the glass was ground down, bodywork done

to it, primed and painted or gelcoated and down the road the line shows up.

A few years ago we had a guy come in who was making Cobra replica kits, and he had all his black hoods showing a line off the middle

where they had laid the matting in without tearing it, he said that he

had primed and painted the hood 3 times and once it was out in the sun

for a bit of time the line would come back. There was nothing we could do for him really except offer to lay up some new hoods for him if he

gave us the mold.

dltreezan 11-26-2003 01:55 AM

yes i tear the mat...u have to otherwise it looks like crap........as far as the coremat goes it adds strength but in order to use it u have to completely soak it in resin.....and as far as thew coremat goes i like the strength weight ratio and this thing is a card hood and what you showed me was a boat hull.....so if there is someone way of convincing me that this thing has any possibility of falling apart which i highly doubt unless i decide to turn it into a boat, otherwise give me an exxact alternative....should i just use matting instead and nothing else...should i use cloth in between? You keep telling me what is excactly maybe you could tell me what exactly you would use in my situation.....as far as what i have its light and strong enough with not much flex....

dltreezan 11-27-2003 12:18 AM

aight next one out im going to go with four layers of 1.5 ounce mat..........and that roller....the bigass one.....what do you think

this sounds good, maybe a bit overkill, try 1 layer of 3/4, then 2 1.5 oz,

otherwise lay out some test patches on a piece

of formica or something to see what kind of thickness you want

to achieve.

you should be using 3/4 oz for the first layer on the gel coat.

dltreezan 11-28-2003 01:02 AM

thanx...sounds like a plan....it will cost me less and will be even lighter i think....great...thanx for the help

Rotaryman13b 11-29-2003 11:06 PM

what would be cool, is if one of those hoods your working on has a reverse dished scoop that could be used to pull air though a radiator for those running electric radiator fans. That way at higher speeds you can use the negative pressure zone that is created on that area of the hood to pull massive amounts of air through the radiator, thats how a lot of gtp cars coolant systems work.

dltreezan 11-30-2003 07:01 PM

id like to do that but the deal is there arent THAT many people running with Efans to make a seperate mold for that...but as of right now i could because im not working really out of a mold....just a clean na hood that i mod for customs jobs but im getting really sick of that so im going to pick something i like for my own tastes and make a mold from it and if anyone wants they can come and get.....right now i finished the two today and i want to get started on my kit....i have always wanted to make stuff for my car and have exactly what i wanted but i never had the money to afford the stuff on the market, and this way i get to have what i want and to sell a few copies to fund my car project and maybe then some....we will see....ill send some pics of them finished later

dltreezan 12-05-2003 12:57 AM

99percent done...just have to clean the edges up in the vent and reinforce the underside by the vent

dltreezan 12-11-2003 12:37 AM

i had one painted a while back and it looked pretty decent considering......this one just got shipped off and the other one with the divider wil be getting painted soon but its from a mold of my less than happy original so we will see what happens. Anyhow i dont plan on making anymore unless someone wants one really bad and has to speak up soon otherwise im just gonna get started on my other projects.
