I just pulled the turbo off my car for the purpose of porting the wastegate. I notice that on the exhaust side, there is a small crack between the two scrolls, and two more smaller cracks on the radiused part of the scroll inlets. I've heard that the early turbos had this problem. My question is: should I put it back together and hope for the best? Or should I put in a new turbo? The unit seems fine otherwise, spins freely, blades are in good shape. You can see the bigger crack in the pic: https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/moon.gif Ooops! No, not that crack!

Hey, how come I can't post my pic?

vosko 10-26-2002 07:26 PM

the only time you should be worried about the crack is if it is on a gasket surface. it doesnt sound like yours are quite there yet

1988RedT2 10-27-2002 08:50 PM

Normal crack? You mean Mazda designed it that way? LOL.

Felix Wankel 10-27-2002 10:09 PM

They all do that.

vosko 10-27-2002 11:14 PM

when you see a crack the size of the grand canyon you need to get worried https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

RXheaven13b 10-27-2002 11:47 PM

Yeah, leave it alone. If you know how to weld you can weld it together but for something that small, I'd leave it alone.

Okay, I'm porting the wastegate and putting it back on. I ditched the A/C compressor last night. Is it just me, or is all this **** under the hood really hard to get at? I had to pull the battery (of course) and take the pulley and clutch off the compressor just to get to the lower front mounting bolt. Took me longer than I thought it would, just like everything else! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/violin.gif It's a Denso compressor, turns over smoothly. Anybody want it? I don't know if it works, but I'd say it's a good bet.

How big does this wastegate port need to be?

Take the spare Jap out of the trunk and make him do it, that's what he's there for. Didn't you read the part in the owners manule about spare mazda tech in trunk?

Finally! I put all that effort into crafting a double entendre for my topic title, and until now it has gone unappreciated. Ungrateful wretches! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/moon.gif
