ok so my coolant....is....everywhere.

it's spraying from a ton of spots. originally it was front he turbo coolant line, replaced it and thats fixed, then it was the thermostat housing aka water neck, fixed that temporarily but its sealed and "fixed" for now.

so i figure, hey no more leaks.

aparently my motor likes to piss cause it has no formed a new one. RIGHT below the alternator on the seal between the front cover and one of the engine plates coolant was spraying straight up, and i now suspect is leaking all around that seal.

what is this? can it be a quick "remove front cover, replace gasket, put cover back on"

or is it not that simple to just remove the front cover? it's really pissing me off this god damn coolant thing.

also if i was burning coolant there'd be lots of white smoke right?

Yes about the white smoke, but not sure the cause of the leak itself. Were exactly is it coming from. From the water pump-to-front housing gasket maybe?

yea front cover has nothing to do with coolant. you're probably talking about the water pump housing <-> front engine housing gasket.

teknics 01-22-2004 07:45 PM

well there is no white smoke, that was just a random question.

well it's behind the water pump it's spraying out from directly udner the alternator whatever that joint is between is where it's coming from.

i have a feel it's going to be a full waterpump replacement job which is going to suck but whatever must be done to prolong this bitch just like 5 months more.

it's not that bad, you don't have to **** with the front cover... meaning you don't have to mess with the eccentric shaft bolt.

the water pump and housing come right off pretty easily.

I agree. I have had good luck with RTV silicone sealant for that area. I assembled mine that way and it has been leak free.

ditto, its only about a 2 hour job

Also if your engine is blowing seals like that. I would suggest that you replace your thermostat! It sounds like it might be rusted closed, or something, because you have to much pressure in your coolant system. Unless you just have REALLY shitty hoses/seals. But after that many problems I would suspect something else....

Might save you some time/money a little later on to put a new $5 dollar thermostat in there https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

hmm i think thats a good idea, i was approaching the idea of replacing that.

can i take off the water pump and just put smoe rtv around it and see how it holds or is it a big disassembly?

whats involved? belt removal, alt removal i guess, thermostate housing removal, what else?

If you're asking about taking off the WP housing its not that bad. I think I remember it like this:

1. take off belts, drain coolant

2. take off alternator

3. take off the main pulley attachment that spins the accessory belts (no need to take the whole pulley off)

4. take off the upper and lower hoses

5. disconnect coolant temp thermo switch thing and coolant hose that goes from your TB, rear housing to back of WP housing

6. take off the whole wp housing

I think thats it, just replace that gasket to engine with a little RTV. Be careful to remember where the washers go I think a couple go after the wp housing and a couple don't.
