I read on fc3s.org about how to build an air box, but if you build the box shouldn't you run a duct to the outside (where the fog lights should be for ex.) to get cooler air than is in the engine bay? or should I do a duct from the fan ( I have the e-fan mod). any suggestions would be helpful. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

not that extreme https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Rob x-7 04-30-2003 09:08 PM

waste of time in my opinion

i like it just because i could suck small children off the streets with that intake.

HAHAHAHAHA, put that on a mazdaspeed rx8, and you'lll have one of the fastest playground vaccuums ever made, LOL

R45 05-01-2003 12:39 AM

Does it even have head lights?

I'm actually curious about this. Any less extreme solutions than the one outlined above?

gazellis 05-01-2003 09:15 AM

I have not installed my cold air box yet due to lack of time. I did change the headlight cover on the passenger side headlight to one of the inlet duct covers (Mariah Motorsports). I admit I paid way too much for the inlet cover but it looks good and was professionally made. It was too much money though, thinking about it after the fact I have seen them made for far less. This allows air directly into the area of the cold airbox. The airbox will have a rubber seal with the hood of the car so it will be relatively closed off from the engine bay. Not a perfect seal but good enough for what I need.

I actually like the inlet cover headlights, but I am short on $$ for that, but I looked at Lowe's last night on what it would cost to build one like the box on fc3s.org and it would cost about 26 bucks, what I have decided to do is to make the box and mount it where the washer fluid box is (I don't have wipers so it is useless to me) and run a 2" PVC pipe underneath to the grill area and enclose my box with a lid and I will have a cold air intake, if there are any more suggestions I would sure appreciate them. I will be post pics when I am done I am going to start on it tommorow after work. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

I mean a cold air box on a normal RX-7, not one of those beasts, lol.

A BIGGG waste of time on a N/A.

pengaru 05-01-2003 06:17 PM

actually it's questionable how useful the headlight cover really is. You'd be better off with a cowl hood or if you ran ducting down low on the front of the car where the brake ducts and radiator inlet are, the headlight covers are at a negative pressure area, at least at the speed this image represents:

UniqueTII 05-01-2003 06:23 PM

From that graph, it looks like the brake duct and front "mouth" are the best places to pick up air (yeah, master of the obvious) so running a duct to the cold air box from there should work well.

[QUOTE]A BIGGG waste of time on a N/A.

why would this be a waste of time?? all cars like cool air and perform better with it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

Rob x-7 05-01-2003 09:10 PM

If you do it, go all the way and duct in some fresh air

dont just go sticking some open element air cleaner in the

engine bay and think it works better then the way

Mazda did it which was to draw the air above the radiator support.

Plenty of cool air there, it keeps your radiator cool doesnt it?

Until someone comes up with some dyno testing of a brand new

air cleaner versus a "cold air" set up, I say they are a waste of time.

good point, good illustration. still, an insulated cool air box for $26 that isolates engine air from intake air shouldn't hurt, and it will look pretty cool when you pop the hood. personally, i'd wrap mine in heat sheild insulation.

and if you want a head light intake, go RX7.com, they have them for $144, and they look better than mariah

RX7Aggie 05-01-2003 09:37 PM

although those headlight intakes seem like they might actually suck air away from the intake due to the negative pressure differential...

booger 05-02-2003 07:39 AM

thanks for your input rob x7,

I will give it some more thought before I do it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Baldy 05-02-2003 07:57 AM

let me know if I have this right:

so, it's best to leave the filter under the hood, and not in front of the radiator, but it's good to duct air from somewhere else. The best place to duct air from would be the in-front-of-the-radiator area. What about down by the brake duct like the guy on the other forum? It looks like either way a hole will have to be cut to route piping, right? So is it better to cut a hole below the filter area, or in the radiator support? Or is it better to just build a box, ducting air from the stock cold air intake?

For using the stock intake setup, should I remove the black plastic that's above the horns?

ROTARYROCKET7 05-02-2003 10:38 AM

talking about this topic. I have a CorkSport Headlight duct that i purchased a long time ago. Ive never put it on. I have the sandpaper and the paint but havnt got a chance to do it. I am also trying to make a cold airbox. Il post pictures later when i get home(in school). I have one peice made. I just have to make the peice by the upper radiator hose and the bottom peice (which will be harder due to the s4 big mass air sensor and the oval shape of the K&N intake.............and im not mechanic or am good with my hands...but i gues ill show you what i got so far so ya can point and laugh at my car lol

I saw your pic in another thread. Looks like you're doing good so far, as far as I can tell.

ROTARYROCKET7 05-02-2003 04:42 PM

lol yeah i hope so. ANd yeah i got stickers on my car there MAZDASPEED they give me 100 hp man lol. Here is the latest pic of my engine bay

DJ Blu 05-03-2003 12:35 PM

if you don't care how it looks get a cowl induction hood... its airflow is incredible.

thats your best bet for speed, but its expensive, and ugly
