So my clutch is toast. One too many missed heal toe downshifts or hard launches at the track has done her in.
My original setup was: Capclutch.com +30% clamp upgrade (el-cheap clutch) Exedy OEM replacement disc FD flywheel Options are considering are: ACT Xact prolite flywheel 9.9 lbs Racing beat Aluminum flywheel SR motorsports aluminum flywheel Clutch discs: Racingbeat http://racingbeat.com/resultset.asp?PartNumber=12523 http://racingbeat.com/resultset.asp?PartNumber=12508 ACT http://www.advancedclutch.com/productcart/...0240mm,%20Turbo http://www.advancedclutch.com/productcart/...0240mm,%20Turbo Pressure Plates Racingbeat http://racingbeat.com/resultset.asp?PartNumber=12608 Mazda OEM ACT - heavy duty. what combo is best. I tried searching... i've been up to date kinda on it but I haven't paid much attension. Application is: TRACK! 75% track use 25% street. I seem to like the racing beat street strip pressure plate with their 6 puck sprung. I have never had a bad Racing beat product.... |
i have the racing beat flywheel. It is really nice. make sure you get the 12 lb. The flywheel is heavy enough for getting around but it will be light enough to scare you if ur not used to it. All the hardware on it is really good quality too.
|
i have a unknown FW likely in the 9-12lbs range. and a ACT SS clutch and ACT HD PP, i love the feel of the the ACT setup, well worth the money as far as i am concerned. i picked the PP and Disc for 516 taxes in with ou the ailignment tool and TOB, because mine was brandnew already.

Right now I'm leaning towards the racing beat Street/Strip Pressure Plate, with the Racing beat 6 puck sprung clutch. ACT Prolite flywheel
Racing beat PP = 199 USD Racing beat 6 puck sprung = $155.00 USD Xact Prolite 9.9 lbs = 246 USD I'm just worried that the 6 puck is too hardcore. But the car is mostly track use now, but I still want to drive her on teh street during summer. Is 6 bucks that hardcore? Also what is the diff between a 4 puck and 6 puck? |
if you're racing it a sprung hub puck style is great, they are only a pain from a stop.

What are people's opinions on the 9.9 lbs ACT exact prolite flywheel?
|
i have the shane racing 9.5 one. they have a competitive price. plus it's pretty?
|
i would go ACT prolite and act street strip setup
if you plan on going big power later ACT flywheel and act extreme PP with sprung six puck......... |
apparently the ACT extreme PP likes to break release forks

I had an ACT HD pressure plate with a RB sprung 4 puck disc on some japanese chromoly 8 lb flywheel in my GTU(TII driveline), and I loved it. The clutch engaged very smoothly, and it was no problem driving in traffic at all, even with the 8 lb flywheel and a torqueless ported n/a engine.
The clutch took a little getting used to, as there isnt an engagement range like the stock clutch(and most organic clutches), there is an engagement point. Mazda clutches seem to have a broader engagement range that most on their stock clutch discs, and I had a hard time getting used to the puck clutch at first. But once I got used to it, I found it easier to transition to other cars. The key to taking off smoothly with a puck clutch is letting the clutch out until it just starts to grab, then just holding the clutch there and feed in more gas. If you try to let out the clutch more as you feed in gas, it will chatter. |
Here is what I like.
The pressure plate has the increased clamp pressure, but the spring leverage is increased so the pedal pressure feels lighter than stock. Easy on your hydraulics & your foot. Lots of BITE.. click here for link I'm running it on an ACT light steel (I think 13 lbs) flywheel. |
right now i'm thinking of the SR motorsports ACT heavy duty PP with the street strip disc and the 9.5 lbs flywheel. 749 with counter weight and hardware and everything isn't a bad price. Hopefully free shipping over 300 bucks is applicable for canadian residents as well.

what is your view on Kevlar discs? Spec clutch Stage 2 offers a kevlar lined full face disc.
-Jason |
Two of my friends have spec stage 2 clutch (in a wrx and an mr2) and they both love them. I'm planning on getting one later.
|
the only option you have is at least 3 plate carbon/carbon 4.5 inch off an older f1 car or champ car. they are only about 4-5 grand from tilton. oh and they are so easy to drive nice and smooth *lurch*

^^ jackass ^^^ get off my computer.
|
kahren reccomended me the ACT 6 puck and i have the heavy duty plate, i'll see how that works out soon enough.
|
tilton makes 1x22 discs and the proper pressure/cover plate for mazda turbo tranny's. are you drag racing or road course racing
|
act also makes great clutches that are fairly priced.
no matter what, just make sure to stay away from centerforce, aside from that, you should be fine. |
