Hey guys I have an 88 rx7 anniversary edition, and the clutch is starting to slip. How much am I looking at to have a new clutch installed? How may hours does it usually call for? Lastly, the shifter knob doesn't seem like it comes off-its the momo knob that came from the factory but looks like its attached to the shifter boot, is this going to be a problem. Thanks for the help guys!

youre looking at about 400 dollars of labor plus the cost of the parts
i suggest you do it on your own... |
do it yourself, you can get it done in a few hours. I had 1revvin7 and bigturbo74 help me out with the job, its fairly easy its just a good amount of work. I bought my clutch and pressure plate for 200 bucks and did it with them and it turned out fine. Don't take it to a shop your better off doing it and learning.

I'd love to but I don't have the tools/garage to do it in, and I don't have the time either, I'm in college. Thanks for the info though, how about the shifter?

whatever you do DONT GET CENTERFORCE.
I'm a proud user of ACT, my centerforce lost 3/4 of its lining (it fell off) while driving, and it only had 3k miles on it, and i wasnt even like slamming it or something when it broke, it just poof went out. kevin. |

i second the do not get centreforce Dual friction clutch. THe firction material on the disc is sooo small... (area wise)
rotaries have little torque down low so uhave to slip the clutch a little more then say a Mustang GT that you drive around in traffic. I replaced my clutch and the previous owner had a dual friction he installed 1 year ago. the pressure plate looked like it could still be used and the flywheel was warped. I got a capclutch.com clutch. THey are rebuilt exedy clutches... at 180.00 USD it was worth a shot. Also whatever u do get your flywheel resurfaced. and at the same time replace the rear main engine oil seal. Trust me on this one. Also GET VERY VERY TALL STURDY JACK STANDS! THIS IS A MUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
i concur about centerforce, i also regretted buying one. Cheers is right about the jackstands. If you gave us your location we could help you out with a RX7 specialist shop that would not rape you for the clutch.
I had a local shop tell me $1000 for parts and labor. Smokin Joe Racing quoted me $600 parts and labor, thats a huge difference. |
actually replacing the clutch on rx7s is a bit easier since the tranny is soo damn light.

yeah 200 and the work yourself is the best bet. i did mine in a weekend.
