My old man wants one for his car. Theonly one I can find is the feed Rotary extreme replica. What others are there? Pictures would be awesome. Thanks guys.

Rob x-7 05-16-2005 07:02 PM

there are practically none for a S4, go with replica unless you want to pay over $500 for one, if anyone even makes one anymore?

Why would there be none for a s4 but some for a different model. Whats the difference? 2nd gen is a 2nd gen.

rowtareh 05-16-2005 10:53 PM

think your pops would like that. it says it fits S5, but your pops is a body work man, i am sure he can fix it. look at all the dents and the rocker panel he pulled out.

Linky

Rob x-7 05-17-2005 05:58 AM

rowtah- it would help if you told him where to buy the lip, not just a picture of one

a s4 bumper is straight across

http://media.popularmechanics.com/images/tb_LEAD-lg.jpg

s5 bumper is slightly different

http://www.trentsautoworld.com/120204/91mazdarx7red.jpg

im sure you can figure something out if you wanted to though, maybe make the whole car S5 style since he is painting it anyways

j9fd3s 05-17-2005 08:33 AM

out of plywood? Thing with fibreglass is the first time u touch something it will crack. Where as urathane wont. That is why I won't get a fibreglass lip.

Fd3BOOST 05-17-2005 02:27 PM

I was not aware that there were differences in the bumpers between the s4 and the s5. Thanks Rob. Any cool aftermarket bumpers that sort of simulate the look of a lip and don't cost an arm and a leg?

Rob x-7 05-17-2005 07:41 PM

I would think about converting the car to S5 style before its painted, I did see a bumper in one of the RX7 tuner magazines SPD Racing sent me when I bought some oil cooler lines off him

its in the volume 2 issue 1 magazine in the first few pages, its shows a black S5 car but the bumper has the S4 moldings on it so you wouldnt have to do a full S5 conversion- which is what most front bumpers would be.

someone was making some lips a few years ago, I only seen one and it flapped up and down like crazy on the highway.

shitty pic of it here, better pic in the magazine:

rowtareh 05-17-2005 10:24 PM

i gave the link rob, unless it did not work when you clicked it. it is off of corksport.

and i never really realized it either, that it is completely different.

would it be harder to convert the whole exterior to s5 though? just the front bumper alone? front bumper looks MUCH better on the s5.

89 Rag 05-17-2005 10:39 PM

It looks like the Mazdaspeed lip or a knock-off of.

I am going to have to agree with some of the others and say that a fiberglass lip is a bad investment. I spent about $750.00 for an original FEED lip including paintwork, and then lopped the head of a varmit at speed during spirited driving. When I heard the loud POP at impact my heart sank and let me know my wallet was going to get a little bit slimmer.

I miss the GM style lip like I had on an older S-10 lowrider, it was the factory lip and could be repaired with a razor knife and a heat gun, if it got to ratty you could just **** can it and put a new one on, they were only $69.00.

Rob x-7 05-18-2005 06:06 AM

you can convert just the front bumper, if you dont mind the body side moldings not matching, even if you paint the s4 body color they are still different then s5

Cheers! 05-18-2005 07:02 AM

Here is the lip I want. It's made by SpeedSource Inc. They are made from Jabrock, and are super dupa dollars. Makes the urathane Feed Lip seem cheap.

The white one is the iscracing.net's front splitter which is 225 and made from fiberglass. I"m unsure how thick the unit is or whether it flaps around in the wind and how resilient it is. The white and blue car has the iscracing.net's front splitter installed on a S5 front bumper (I don't have pic on work computer will update post from home)

Rob x-7 05-18-2005 06:07 PM

both of those cars are S5

S4s get no love

teknics 05-18-2005 07:04 PM

s5's are schweet.

hey dave i got an old s5 rear bumper, just gotta do repair on it, its at robs place right now so you could even have him do it if you want, of course id have to charge ya like $70 for the bumper....i even have an s5 front bumper which just needs paint, $100 for that.

How much of an interest would there be in a lip spoiler for FC's that is stronger and stiffer than urethane, but wont break like fiberglass when you hit it? If there is enough genuine interest, I could make it happen.

Rob x-7 06-07-2005 05:57 AM

everyone says they would want one, but in the group buy section when chuck was going to make them out of urethane no one ponied up the money.

people are all talk.

<$200 shipped.

He has both an S4 and S5 version - note the drop down list in the web page.

From what I can tell, he makes them to order.

Mine took about 3 weeks.

I like it.

I was driving through some grass & hit a tree stump.

It broke out a chunk of the lip, but had it been any stronger, the damage would have been far worse.

It turned out to be an easy FG patch instead of a major bumper repair.

I'm still happy.

sureshot 06-07-2005 08:16 AM

I finally got around to connecting the stock front bottom pan to the trailing edge of the splitter.

My AC now seems to work better.

89 Rag 06-07-2005 08:49 AM

I forgot to ask when I posted earlier in this topic, but why in hell did you call it a chin spoiler? It must be an east coast thing...

sureshot 06-07-2005 09:54 AM

It seems like "spoiler" has become sort of a generic term for aero stuff.

Us amateurs mostly refer to vertical things as dams, and horizontal things as splitters & wings.

I'm sure the aerodynamics guys are much more specific.

Not suprised one bit. And people wonder why there isnt very much aftermarket support for the FC in the states...

BigTurbo74 06-08-2005 05:30 AM

agreed. i do like the idea of making them to order though. if people really want one, like myself, they will be willing to wait. especially if they are urethane and they can't get them anywhere else even the dealership.

The problem with that is I would have to eat the cost of the mold, and just hope that I get enough orders to cover the cost. Given this crowd, it doesnt take an econ major to see just how risky that is from my end.

psyclo 06-08-2005 12:21 PM

It would have to be done by someone who could easily do the composite work themselfs and would do it for themselfs only not expecting to make a profit. Then the mold would be there with no expected return.

Which if I can find the time this summer I would like to do.

teknics 06-08-2005 02:13 PM

yea, ya cheap fc bastards. the cars can be bought cheap, doesnt mean they should be built cheap.

Wait, let me get this straight. You want to work for free to help out fc owners who are too cheap or broke to buy decent parts for their cars, but still take it on themselves to bitch about there not being an aftermarket?

Since you put it that way, come work for me. Since youre time is so invaluable you dont care about getting paid for your work, it would be a great way to drop my prices.

psyclo 06-08-2005 03:11 PM

No, I mean I would make one for myself since there are so few on the market, and I want to do some more composite work for my own intrest.

Then if other people happened to want one I could make them one also. I wouldn't be going into it looking to come out ahead.

mazdaspeed7 06-08-2005 03:13 PM

BTW, I know there are exceptions, and you apparently are one of them. But the sad fact is there arent enough people like you to make production runs on most things feasible.
