The water pump went in my 89 GXL, put in a new pump no problem.. put it all back and now it wont start... any ideas?
|
THe water pump in no-way can cause the engine to not fire over... check everything... it could be as simple as being flooded.. get back with us and let us know
-Markus |
any chance I could have fucked the timing and caused it not to start???
|
Well, other than unbolting the waterpump and replaceing it... did you change or remove anything else around the motor? maybe you unplugged something? or knocked something loose. just go thru and check all connections...
Does the car sound like it wants to start? what is it doing? does it turn over but not catch? explain further... -Markus |
well all the belts had to come off, the water pump pully and the eccentric drive pully. The car is turing over but its not catching..
|
Under the hood you'll find a fuse box (located on the drivers side shock tower)... open that box up and it will reveil several fuses, see one marked EGI COMP? Remove that fuse... set it aside, go inside your car and press the gas pedel to the floor. DO NOT PUMP THE PEDAL.. While holding the pedal to the floor turn the key and let the starter turn for about 10 seconds.. you'll notice your tachomater will not function during this..
After you've done the above mentioned, replace the fuse.. get back in the car KEEP YOUR FOOT OFF GAS PEDAL this time... start the car. If it does not start, try this 2 or 3 more times... after that you've messed something up.. and i would have to get alittle more info on trying to get your car started. -Markus "Try that above, come back if it don't work.... good luck" |
its started up for a few seconds and then shut off.. I am guess it means its flooded?
|
do the unflood proceedure again... but right when it starts, keep it running! Once it fires up hold the pedal, get the RPM's up to about 3000 and hold them there until it will idle on it's own. than take her out for a spin. Remember rotary's dont like to be cold started than shut off right away. Example.. moving from garage to driveway, if your going to move it and the engine is cold from sitting, you'll need to drive it for ATLEAST 5 min to get the coolant flowing thru the throttle body/engine. So, do the unflooding again, keep it running and take her for a spin. when you get back, check for leaks from the waterpump/coolant housing area.
-Markus "again... goodluck" |
thanks for the help.. i ll get back to you
|
you might have knocked the CAG connection loose
If the car doesnt idle...its a vacuum leak |
it started and then shut off, hmmm.
that would eliminate you knocking the AFM plug off, I say you have a flooded car. |
yeah the car was flooded it runs fine now but it didn't fix the water leak, T think its leaking about the shaft in the pump so I going to buy a new pump and hope that works.

Didn't you just replace the water pump? Now it leaks and you are replacing it again?
I just found out that mine is bad while assembling my first rebuild; it leaked through the weep hole and it took a while to find where the drips were coming from. |

for the price of the pump you should have just changed it.
you had it out, for the extra $45-$60 swap it out and you get the gasket with it. Its about the labor involved sometimes, not the price of the part. |
I do all the work my self so it dosn't really matter...
|
I am not having much luck... I put the new pump on but now it its not even turning over... battery is fine but when I turn the key there is nothing..
