i am in no way a engine head so i dont know whats going on. i was driving down the road and all the sudden there was a popping noise below me. my engine rpm's were so low and sparatic it wasnt helpinn matters. half the lights in the car went dead and i instantly notice i had no power what so ever. i pulled over and with the car still running, (some how, idleing like hell and the engine bounceing around like mad) the overall engine looked ok, belts ok. i then decied to check under the car, this is when i notice the cat converter was glowing red hot. actually more like bright orange. now im guessing my cat converter simply blew out but id like someones opinion that knows about engines. its a bonze super flow cat converter and its still under a year old so hopefully they can help out to. any thoughts would be apreciated. thanks

well i contacted the rx7.com guys and they said it sounds like my engine just went out. its got 120,000 on it now and i was starting on doing reasearch for a new one anyway. im still going to look at my catalytic converter though first. any thoughts on an engine though. i was thinking 13b-rew. i like that sas raceing 3 rotor bad boy that pumps out 700hp.

Step one- remove old cat. Step two- replace old cat with midpipe. Step three- go have fun and shoot some really nice flames. And before I forget watch your boost...

Drifter93 05-29-2003 11:15 AM

And as for the engine. Go with the 13B but have a good street port put on it and any other things that you can afford while the engine is already out of the car. Less money to do it now then to do it later.

yo take out the cat and put a RB complete exhaust with headers silencer and cat back man

guyverx 05-29-2003 07:24 PM

well i just removed the cat converter and started the car up, its loud with out an exhaust system on it but the engine is running smooth now. im sure im shooting flames out my header big time. unfortunatly i shined a light through the cat and its going right through. im not seeing a blockage. so im trying to take off my y pipe now, mabey thats the problem. not to sure how though. i figure since i have dual exhaust it cant be a mufler in paticular because it would just run out the other pipe. but if my y pipe is clear of sny stopage and my muflers are its definatly got to be the cat even though it looks clear. like i said im not much of an engine guy. r/c car engine mabey but not real car.

pengaru 05-29-2003 07:51 PM

maybe muffler blew packing out and is clogged a bit? dunno, but if it runs well with the cat off something is not right there, either running really rich and combusting in the exhaust or a restriction somewhere causing heat to build up.

I just got my TII running with my Hayes motor and my Cat was glowing after we finally got it going. As it turns out, the water thermo sensor is bad. At 68 degrees ferenheit, the thermo sensor is supposed to read 240 ohms, mine is 1.85 K. This condition causes the EGI control to think that the temperature is -10 F and therfore cranks up the fuel to compensate. The exess fuel runs through the engine, into the exhaust and then burn in the exhaust. Causing the exhaust to glow red.

Check your thermo sensor. It is located behind the alternator on the water neck. It has a plug similar to a fuel injector. Your FSM should tell you how to check it.

Hope this helps you.

cool i'll check that sensor out then. but i took a broom handle to my cat converter so now its just a hollow pipe that looks like a converter. i hooked everything back up last night and tried to start it but it wouldnt go. it gave all the signs of it being flooded so i did the 3 step unflooding bit like 12 times and still no luck. it got close the last few times. i was thinking i could try the long unflood method today some time. but im wondering if its going to be to rich for my mixture now that all the preasure is gone, and how do i adjust it back down.

guyverx 06-01-2003 08:00 PM

well i realized once i got out to the car i dont even have a thermo sensor on my model, oh well. anyway i tried some starting fluid and that was a no go. then i decided to push start it. it tried but no go. then i decided to do the complex unflood method. did it and no go, not even a try. my friend knows for a fact that there is spark at the end of the lines but dosent think its going through the plugs. bad plugs mabey. then i decided id go for new plugs so i pulled a top one and a bottom one for refrence when getting my new ones. the tips of them were soaked in fuel after only the 5 seconds i tried to crank it. do you think its just really really flooded or are the plugs bad? when i did the complex un-flood it smelled like fuel but there was no smoke or fumes visiable and i did not notice anything that had been pushed out of the plug holes. im stumped here.
