I bought used carpet from a guy, cuz mine is green and his was red. He says I have to take out the entire dash assembly to change out the front carpet piece. Is there any alternative?

you can try and remove the shifter and the lower dash brace. its a big U shaped thing the holds the bottom of the dash, and you can prolly get your old carpet out. its really not that hard to take the dash out though

How the hell did you get green carpet?

OK, I guess I could take out the whole dash. Is the Haynes manual ok for this, because right now that's all I have. I've heard that the Mazda shop manual is better, but hopefully the Haynes will do.

be very careful when working with the dash. There are many little plastic pieces that are brittle and will break if you look at them funny. The haynes manual should be fine. Just go slow!

Yeah, cool thing is that the guy gave me a dash when I bought the carpet. I just didn't know if I needed it. If I asked him, he'd prolly come help me istall it.

neither one is very good for the dash. there are 3 bolts under the defroster panel, 2 on each side, and 4 on the bottom. there are 2 big electrical connectors on the drivers side, 2 bolts to hold the steering column in, the radio antenna, speedo cable, and i think 2 logicon connectors and it should lift out to the passenger side. you may not have to pull the whole thing, maybe just loosen it and lift it an inch or 2. the carpet has to slide under the heater box, and around the shifter etc. just make sure you have time and go slow
