Howdy gents! The other day my friend and I went crusing the canyons down here in So Cal. He rides in a 94 240 with some exhaust, cold air, and suspension mods, whereas I'm rollin' in a bone stock NA 87. Needless to say he whooped be, but I wanted to take it easy since I'm still learning my car, and I'm still new to the whole rotary scene.

Anyways to brass tacks. What is the highest RPM that I can shift at, but still keep my engine safe. I was shifting at around 4K just to stay on the safe side. I heard rotaries can take high revs better than some piston engines, but there was always the picture in my mind of one of my apex seals blowing on a car that I've owned for only two days.

The second question involves the tranny. On my previous car, I would generally match revs before downshifting (revving the engine while in neutral so the flywheel is going as fast as the lower gear). Anyways, one of my friends told me that such a procedure screws up your synchro becuase it has to attach to such a fast spinning object. So... is downshifting without matching or any gas better for the tranny, or is rev matching better?

Oh, and roaming the canyons rocks, especially when you're still learning the ins and outs of your car. The things handles great!

Rotaries are meant to rev high, taker her up to 7k. Just downshift w/o rev matching.

matching the revs when shifting up or down causes _less_ wear on syncros, provided you match correctly.

FrestyleFC3S 05-07-2003 01:40 PM

yea....pengaru is right....synchros are over the gears and have teeth that grab the gears and place them together, this is needed to shift correctly ..... when you rev match, the gears are alighned properly and the shift is smooth because there is no need to the synchro

less wear on tranny = rev matching or heel toe

rev taht baby up high, u have NA? isnt that 8000...or is that the GTUs model only?

i have turbo II and i rev to ~6800 all the time, sometimes i let it wind down without upshifting, listen to the sound of the rotary engine - sounds like an airplane i live for taht sound

I rev it like crazy sometimes, even upto redline, but that is only every once in a while..
