Hey guys, Its been awhile since I've been back here, but anyways. I've gotten in pretty good with a local muffler shop who does custom exhausts, and will do it very cheap for me. I was considering having them make me a turbo back exhaust out of 2 1/2" pipe, to a Y-pipe to two cheapo ebay mufflers (I know they're ricey or whatever, but I'm going cheap here-I'm in my last year of college). I'm thinking no cats, just those mufflers. #1. Can this be done? #2. What else will I need to make my car run well (FCD,etc?).

Also, I'm looking to get more power from this little thing and was thinking of this full exhaust, then some type of boost controller, and possibly doing something with the fuel system i.e. larger injectors and fuel pump. The car runs great, has 60k miles on it and is in great condition so its ready for some mods. What should I do and could you break it down into costs also. Thanks in advance!

Not if it is done with your typical muffler shop "crush" bends

Yea you need mandral bends. You're going to have to port the wastegate and atleast upgrade to a walrbo 255lph fuel pump.

I assume your car isn't a beater, and you suggest that it "is in great condition" so I figure it isn't. I would strongly suggest to you that the AE is worth a lot more in good original condition than it is stripped down and modded out. I would put your money into refreshing it with stock pieces.

I don't think you'll find a shop that will put in a system without a cat. Shops are pretty casual here in Virginia, but even so, the only way they would make a cat replacement pipe was if I gave them the dimensions via a sketch, and that I make no reference as to its intended function. Its illegal for them to take out a cat and not put one back in.

Briefly, to answer your questions:

#1: Sure, it can be done.

#2: Yes, you should get an FCD.

I cringe every time I remove a stock piece from my T2, knowing I'll never put it back on. My car is in pretty good shape for an '88, and the leather interior is nice. I can't image stripping down an AE. Maybe I'm just a mushy sentimentalist.

One last thing: If you're going to be doing things on the cheap, don't take on too much, or you'll be digging between the sofa cushions looking for money for a new engine.... Cheap power is never reliable power.

Oh yeah. Don't forget to port that wastegate.

It is in great shape, and I've already spent a ton of cash basically replacing the entire exhaust (except the downpipe) with stock pieces. I know keeping it original is worth more, but these cars on the high side are only worth $3000 or a little more these days, and I don't see myself selling it because its worth more to me.

Will crush bends really make that much of a difference?
