i installed my cd player about 3 weeks ago, damn antenna ,lol but the cds sound like a damn tape deck because of the built in amps on the GXL,they hiss like a cassette tape would. my haynes book says there are 5 amps in the car,one to each speaker and a main amp,i know where the ones are for the spekers (right beside them) but does anyone know where the main amp is,the audio store wants a 100 bucks to tell me where it is and i doubt they know untill they tear the interior apart, anybody have a clue?thanks

i have an 88 GXL and when i removed the stock radio, the main amp went with it if im not mistaken. I also replaced all 4 speakers and took out the amps from the rear and i have no problems with nasty sound. they were trying to tell me it wouldnt work cause i need special speakers and i dont know what other bullshit, but it worked perfect. Now that i think about it, i think mine was sounding like crap with the stock speakers too. i forgot already. I put clarions up front and Pioneer 3 ways in the rear. Sounds nice.

You could if you want to, which is what I would do- run new wires to your speakers, leave all the factory **** intact so you can easily convert back to stock in case you sell or what have you. I know in a convertible- there is one behind the dash speakers, and one behind the drivers seat under the spare tire cover. Hope that helped

My guess on the amps would be under the storage bins and behind the dash speakers. But again, I would just run a set of new wires to each speaker and leave it all intact
