I have my 88 SE on the road now. My brakes,clutch, and shifter thingy(lamens terms) suck really bad.



Description: Pushing the pedal all the way to the floor, it takes about 15-20 feet to stop, depending on speed. I already know I need new brakes, but what are the most reliable ones you all have used from experience. I don't want to spend a **** load of money, it is currently my daily driver right now. I don't go outrageous speeds as of right now, I don't race, autox or drift. Just something daily.



And..............My shifter REALLY sucks. The thing is looser than Jenna Jameson, and hard as hell to shift into 3rd gear, literally gotta try shifting 2-3 times for 3rd gear. I had the experience of a aftermarket short shifter, which felt amazing, and I liked it alot. I don't remember the name of it though, sorry. I will get that information for you. Just looking for something decent, that won't break the bank, feels great while shifting, and does not give off too much rattling while at idle.



And..............clutch. My clutch REALLY sucks. I was going to just go with an ACT performance clutch. I don't currently have any mods, but I wil later, and I want a decent clutch, that feels great, and gives me somewhat of a better launch. Besides, the clutch in there now is 16 years old. Time for replacement. Best experience for you guys in clutches.



I will take any answers you can provide. Time is appreciated.

1 Brakes may have a leak somewhere or air in the lines?

2 Shifter bushings are most likely shot to hell.

Im having brake problems as well but mine dont go down they stay hard and wont go down to brake.



and the shifter if it is really loose it is probably like my car that has no bushings.



ACT is a good all around clucth but is infamous for clucth chatter. I happen to like centerforce.

I'd try bleeding ur brake lines and redoing that.

Like I told you earlier today when you were here man.

Drain the brake fluid out and bleed the brakes to start out. Refill it with a good high temp DOT approved fluid. The brake fluid in that car is most likely the original. Your pedal is dangerously soft. If they still suck get some stainless lines and a better pad like Hawks.

My shifter that you mentioned is mazdaspeed and I even cut an additional 2" off the post and rethreaded it. Yours is some bullshit aftermarket ****. I don't know what it is but it blows. You should save some cash and pick up a B&M short shift kit and new bushings if they do not come in the kit.

Lastly like i also told you today, put in a ACT street strip disc and heavy duty pressure plate.

That would be enough to get you going. After that I personally would get a better suspension set up. Start with some good H&R springs and Tokico struts. Replace the worn bushings etc..

Then once the car feels more stable get some go fast goodies.

I'd just change the shifter bushings first. Its like $20 and takes 10 minutes and you might be happy enough with that that you wont want to spend all the money for a short shifter.



ACT are good. I am thinking of running an RB street/strip pressure plate with stock Mazda disc on my NA.

His isnt a bushing issue, someone has put some POS after market shifter on there and it is two pieces. So now instead of being a solid stickthat bolts into the trans its a flexing two piece, pile of **** that flops around like a dead fish. Now if he wants to buy a used stock shifter and some new bushings thats another story.

I will replace the bushing for now, and get the short shifter later on. I have seen the B&M SS and it said it came with bushings. So that is a sweet deal.



Sorry Dave, I forgot you said to get new pads. But I will try bleeding the brakes and new brake fluid in them and test it out. If it is not too soft, no worries for pads yet.
