Ok my brakes started to act up. The brake pedal is all the way up but it is ******* hard. (LOL) when I hit the brakes it starts to slow down very softley till the rpm's drop then it grabs hard. Sometimes it will brake normal like the pedal will go lower down and then brake good. but when it wants to it wont brake WTF ! ! ! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif

Um.. Brake booster problem?

I am still a little unclear as to what you mean exactly..

Baldy 04-06-2004 07:43 AM

the brake booster works off of vacuum, make sure that vacuum hose isn't loose or cracked

rmaiersg 04-06-2004 12:22 PM

It's a big hose though. Wouldn't it **** with the idle and what not?

UniqueTII 04-06-2004 12:24 PM

Do you have ABS or no?

RX7 13B 4 UR AZZ 04-06-2004 06:05 PM

no abs I checked the hose and it did not have any visible cracks but to be safe i wraped in electrical tape very tightly and took off the stock el cheapo clampd and put in new screw type clamps.

Sometimes it brakes fine like it always did but some times the pedal gets really hard and the car dosent want to brake. ? ? ? ?

sounds like the booster is bad

RX7 13B 4 UR AZZ 04-06-2004 06:58 PM

will the booster off an 88 SE work on my Sport?

TheCamel 04-06-2004 09:20 PM

there are a few checks you can do to see if it is the booster,

1) With the car off, press the brakes 3-5 times, until you no longer hear a whoosh when you press the pedal or it become firm, hold the brake pedal down and start the car, the pedal should drop about 1 inch or so when the car reaches idle and a vacuum is created. if not, there is a vacuum leak, or the check valve for the booster may be bad.

2) You need 2 people for this test, one pushing the brake pedal, the other listening around the booster. with the car running, have the brake pedal pressed and listen for a constant air leak around the booster. You should hear it as the brake is applied and it should stop when the pedal reaches full travel and stops. If it is constant, you have a hole in the internal diaphragm.

And yes the boosters you mention are interchangeable.

I will try these tests see if its bad.

is it hard to change the booster?
