Here we go. I just bought another TII. Its an 87 with 76k Miles. Stock engine, great compression, stock ports. Also the car is equipped with a Haltech E6K, wich is currently un-tuned. 1600cc Secondary's and a Walbro 255.

Anyway, on to my question. This car has a GT40 on it. .58 on the cold side and a .94 I believe on the Hot. What would a somewhat safe Boost pressure be? Its sitting at Banzai Racing with a 8psi spring in the wastegate. Would It be ok to throw a bigger spring in it and run 10-12psi? Or am I going to grenade the thing? I have no desire to make a ton of power on a stock port engine. That can wait untill I can get it rebuilt...so any info is appreciated....If running only 8psi will keep my engine good for a bit longer than that is fine with me.

Also, as a side note, I am VERY aware that this Turbo is wayy to big. Not only for what I want to use the car for, but also for a stock engine. I have every intention of selling this turbo and buying something smaller, so please dont give me the lecture about how stupid it is to have this big of a turbo on this car and how much lag I will have, as I am very aware of these things. I simply want to get it tuned so It is driveable for now, untill I am able to replace the turbo....

If it's setup properly it shouldn't grenade at anything under 1 bar.

Why not just run it at 8 psi, get it tuned etc and go from there? If its not fast enough then raise the boost with an BC.

Find out if you are running out of fuel pump, injectors, overtemping etc at the lower boost first and then turn it up as you desire.

Thats the route I am looking to take. The only Issues I have is that I have no idea how to tune a Haltech, and I am not willing to turn up the boost without it being properly tuned. I suppose I could have 2 maps for it, 1 tuned for 8psi and 1 tuned for 12psi and upload each individual one as desired?

I definatly got some reading to do about the Haltech so I can do minor adjustments on my own rather than driving 2hrs to Banzai...

Screw it, have it tuned and see what it does. Maybe that turbo is not TOO big.

Btw, you ever find where that boost leak was coming from on the old TII?

Actually no...sold the car before I had the chance. I am pretty sure it was a bad turbo itself.

Also, I just learned that the cold side of this Turbo is .58 and the hot is .94 I was told this thing will take awhile to spool, and when it does it will run out of Boost at roughly 6krpm....I definatly will be buying a different Turbo. I am leaning towards a GT35R....we will see.

i doubt itll run out of boost to be honest with ya. i mean, if youre limiting it to 8psi im sure once it starts spooling itll hit full spool (8 psi) pretty quick.

Well Im going to get an EBC and bump it up to 12psi when needed, but no more than that for now. What its going to boil down to is what it acts like this weekend when its done. If it comes into boost before 4k and holds it all the way to the top then I will be happy. I think on down the road I may upgrade the Turbines to different specs, but hopefully it will be ok for now.

Not that it truly matters, I am getting this thing tuned just in time for winter, so I wint be driving it much anyhow.

1Revvin7 10-25-2005 10:02 PM

When you tune a car, each map is tuned for various loads, ie: 30" of vac to 30 psi...

I would get it intially tuned and dialed in by a professional. You will always have to be tweaking, unless you just want to overichen everything...

Ceipherz 10-26-2005 11:26 AM

Exactly what im doing. The car is Sitting at Banzai Racing right now being tuned. After I get the car back this weekend I will hook the laptop up to it and start picking around, but I wont be changing anything I till i know wtf im doing...
